MGS3 is just a totally immersive experience, you have to treat your own wounds to recover health, you need to catch your own food and eat when you're hungry, you need to constantly camoflage yourself to match the terrain and the environment is seemless and continuous, it really is a thing of beauty. The length, content and scale of this game is just incredible, and there's so many neat little easter eggs to find. It also has the most thrilling chase scene seen in any video game which is heavily derived from the Great Escape and goes on for ages. And finally it has one of the best, if not THE best stories seen in a game, rich and thematic as well as a great and cheeky subversion of Cold War history.

@SN - Y'know...that Penny Arcade comment was pretty obvious. I should eat before taking to the internet. That's embarrassing for me.

-I've been told this by many people. I saw the game in action a bit and WAS very intrigued. I'm far from ruling it out to play.
And although FFX is down my list of favourite Final Fantasys, it probably does have my second favourite ending, so that's also an intriguing prospect.

@Ethos- I was being sarcastic since the Penny Arcade boys labled the PS3 as "sucking" and being "unexciting".

Also play MGS3, that game has one of the most amazing endings ever! It really makes you empathise with Big Boss, and totally explains why he looses faith in his government. It's one of those totally immersive experiences that just rocks you, and feels so much bigger than a game. A few of the mechanics may be a little outdated now though, but it is entirely well worth it. I havn't experienced such an impactful ending since FFX.

In the interest of being a little more helpful MGS4 follows on from MGS2, while MGS3 is a prequel set during the Cold War (it really is the best of the series).

@SN - I DO hear that MGS3 is amazing. The Essential Collection is on my list somewhere to play....

-PSN isn't all that sucky or unexciting. Not like it used to be. Not with Calling All Cars, Flower, and Fat Princess. Echo Chrome is pretty funky too, and the Pixel Junk games.

It's almost better not to understand 4's story. The game starts off well but goes quickly downhill once you leave the first level. Don't play MGS4, play MGS3, that game is amazing!

As for Penny Arcade but they still have their crappy little downloadable game on Sony's sucky unexciteing PSN don't they? I guess they have no aversion to money, even if it is of an unexciting sort.

@Darth - Bah-ha ha ha ha! SO true about Fable.

-MGS4 will never make sense either way. I'm only about 4 or 5 hours in, and I'll eventually beat it, but it's not high on my list. The introduction of trophies, like I said, will help.

- While I don't quite share Etho's ire for PA for their post (I forget if it was Gabe or Tyco), I do think it's pretty silly that they're mocking Sony for making a good business decision. Regardless of the motivation, I don't see any way that the PS3 slim and price drop if anything but awesome for consumers, so why all the hate?

- I know I'm the only one who cares, but I will miss the linuxability of the PS3 :f. It was an awesome feature with pretty much no target audience.

- I've raved about my love for Persona 3 to anybody who'll sit still long enough to listen, so I'll definitely be picking the portable version up, if for no other reason than to support the game and the idea of PSP ports of late-gen PS2 games. In fact, I imagine this is the version I'm going to recommend to people if they have a PS2 and a PSP for one reason alone: controllable NPC party members. I'll agree that the graphics don't look as good, but don't kid yourself, they didn't look that great on the PS2, either, so it's not a huge loss

- We all know the current description of Fable III will have practically nothing in common with the finished product. I suggest we all forget about it until it's released, and see what comes out then :D.

- For FFXIII, I'm just glad they didn't stick with their original plan of completely finishing the PS3 Japanese version, then starting on the 360 port and localization. That just seemed like a huge waste of resources and time.

- I have a save game about an hour into MGS4, seems fine so far, but I haven't been motivated to pick it up again since about 5 months ago. It's one of those things I've always wanted to finish, but other things keep getting in the way. I've played 1 and 2, but not 3. How essential is 3's story line to making sense of 4?

It's too bad you didn't like it! I thought it was badass with cutscenes that were way too long and self-indulgant.

-MGS1&3 are classics, MGS2 was flawed but good ... MGS4 was an abomination unto humanity, a story heavy game with an awful story, which dumbed down the gameplay until appropriate for retarded children ... and then there was the absoloute shambles of its design. Just awful!
