Unlike Ethos, I’m going to honor the voice of the people. I’ve owned Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne for almost 2 years, and now, in honor of our second Backlog Week, I’m finally going to play it. Sure, there’s no way I finish it in a week, but that’s not really the point anyway.
Check back later today for my initial thoughts. Time to see if the game’s as much a challenge as people claim.

I stopped playing at Matador …
I only know the battle by reputation, haven’t suffered through it myself (yet).
Not finish it in a week? Psssh. The first time I played Nocturne I finished a 50 hour playthrough in 3 days. THREE DAYS! Of course, I was unemployed and living with a friend, so I could afford to do nothing but eat, sleep, and play games, unlike Oliver. Oh wait….
PWNED
Is that a challenge, 7?!
@7th: I can totally relate to that. I think I would have done the same thing with P3 when I first played it if I hadn’t had that pesky job get in the way. It’s not often I have a video game experience like that, so I love them when they happen.
@Darthy – A game has to be really outstanding for me to play it 16 hours/day every day until it’s done. In a lifetime of gaming, I’ve only been pulled into a game that deeply twice: Nocturne and Fallout 3. Persona 3 was one of those games that it *almost* happened to. I started P3 during a two week Christmas furlough, so I had the ability to play it that obsessively, but it took me the full holiday time to finish the >100 hour game. I got pulled into it enough that any non-gamer would have found the amount of time I spent on it each day insane, but it wasn’t quite at the Nocturne/F3 level.
@Riddles – I hereby formally challenge you to finish Nocturne before the end of Backlog Week 2. I’d challenge Ethan to finish Patapon 2, but let’s be honest — if a game is more than 5 hours long, Ethan ain’t finishing it in a week. Peggle? Finished. Flower? Finished. Everything other game he’s started? Not finished.
No way, man! I beat Darksiders and Mass Effect 2 and Final Fantasy XIII, and Spirit Tracks, and God of War III and the first two, mind you! I’m a changed man!
@7th: Yeah, P3 was my first SMT game, so everything just seemed so….. new, I guess. I think the only other games that grabbed me to that level were FFVII and maybe the original Mass Effect (although saying I finished ME1 in a weekend really isn’t that much of an accomplishment). It’s probably a good thing games like that don’t come along too often, though, I don’t think I’d have the stamina to pull that off too often :F. When I was playing P3, I was pretty much eating, sleeping, working, or playing, and that was all I did for about 2 weeks. Games like that kill my productivity level, but they’re SO worth it.
@Riddles: I bet you could finish the game if you work fast. You’ve got until Monday morning, right? If you start now, that’s 3 straight days, or 60 hours (assuming 4 hours per day for eating/sleeping/etc)! You may come out of it smelly and unkempt, but you’ll be a MAN who’s smelly and unkempt
Oliver is already smelly and unkempt, so there are only upsides to your idea DG!
@Ethos, you also finished Uncharted 1 & 2
And Infamous!
