Hoo-ah. It’s Sunday. E3 2010 kicks off in less than 36 hours. For people like myself, this is something to get excited for. E3 2010 is the single greatest deluge of gaming information in a given year. Exciting announcements, tons of demonstrations, tons of new videos and media, and of course, impressions from the show floor. Like all E3’s before it, E3 2010 will set the general tone and direction of the game industry for the next year. So, it’s a big deal, and it’s definitely something to be excited for as a gamer.
E3 is almost like Christmas for gamers. Every year, there are those couple of announcements or game reveals that we’re desperately hoping to see. Sometimes our wishes come true, and sometimes they don’t – but, hell, making up the wishlist is half the fun anyway. So. Without further ado, let’s discuss some things I’m expecting – or hoping – to come out of E3 2010
New Wii Zelda Title – Well, this one’s a given. We’ve been looking for concrete information on this game ever since we got over Twilight Princess – which, if you’re like me, wasn’t too long after release. Sure, we’ve had a few clever handheld titles to tide us over, but Toon Link’s dual-screened appeal is wearing thin, if you ask me. We need a new Zelda game. Die-hard Zelda fanboys like myself are losing faith, and that’s something that I, personally, never thought could happen. I’ve all but given up on Nintendo as a company; all I ask now is for them to give me Zelda – alive and unspoiled.
The Last Guardian
This is a similar case, actually. It’s been five years since Team ICO gave us Shadow of the Colossus. I understand, of course, that if they hope to live up to SotC’s brilliant standard, it’ll require some time. But, the cat’s been out of the bag for a while – they released a trailer last year, if your recall. And then, we didn’t hear a thing. Hopefully, with E3 2010, that will change.
Oh, and confirmation of the rumored Shadow of the Colossus/ICO HD remixes (ala God of War collection) would also be great. Eh? Eh, Sony? Come on, now.
Persona 5, Anyone…?
This one’s a bit of a long shot, but it’s not impossible. I wasn’t sure if Atlus would be at the show, initially, but a quick Google search confirmed that they are – and while a Persona 5 isn’t on their list of games to showcase, perhaps a surprise reveal could be in store? The Persona series has performed well enough in the states; I think E3 would be a fine place to announce it. For PS3. Please.
Ninja Theory’s Devil May Cry 5
This has been rumored in the past, and I’d love to see it confirmed at the show. Ninja Theory, the developer behind Heavenly Sword and the soon- to-be-released Enslaved: Odyssey to the West might be the developers behind the fifth installment of Capcom’s demon-slaying franchise. It’s definitely a franchise that could use a shot in the arm, especially if it’s to contend with the high bar set by Bayonetta. And who knows, Ninja Theory might be the ones to do it.
Kingdom Hearts 3
Last, but certainly not least. It’s been over four years since Kingdom Hearts II. I’m losing interest in the franchise fast. I don’t want to see it devolve into an endless stream of portable spin-offs. Nomura needs to get his shit together, and give us some info on the next real installment in the Kingdom Hearts story. Am I right, or am I right?
Well, that’s my wishlist. Or a part of it, at least. I could go on and on about E3 wishes, but I have to work tomorrow morning. And besides, the show will start soon enough anyway – so all wishful thinking will be rendered moot.

-P5: I’d love to see it, but I doubt they’d premier it in the West. We’ll probably be waiting until TGS.
-DMC5: Part of the reason that Japanese gaming has started sucking so much these days is because the publishers are increasingly looking to abrogate their development to the West, I don’t see how farming out the franchise will really help the series, it will just end up as the new Silent Hill.
-You are not going to see KH3 at E3. The KH team need to finish up work on VS XIII before they can start work on anything else, just play BBS.
-Wow Oliver, you’ve written an entire weeks worth of articles in the span of a couple of days …
Zelda sucks. There, I said it. Most overrated franchise in gaming history.
trICO…me wants!
I’d rather get another mainline SMT game than Persona 5. They need to space it out and come up with some ideas to improve on P4 the way they did on P3. What those are, I have no idea. P4 was pretty awesome. Or even another weird spinoff like Digital Devil Saga.
DMC5 was 4 any good? I only played the first one which I got stuck in towards the end (I had fire glove things and a sword that wasn’t shiny like Alistair (or whatever it was called).
KH3 isn’t it “Birth By Sleep” or something equally stupid sounding? I played through KH1 back when it came out and was surprised to like it. But I was pretty drunk most of the time I played it, so I don’t remember much of it. The Card Game sequel was retarded. Was KH2 good?
Zelda: I haven’t really seen the appeal since Zelda went 3D, I assume there’s something there, I just haven’t got it.
P5: I’m absolutely dying for a HD Persona, I’m looking for incremental improvement rather than revolutionary change.
DMC4: Was rather crap.
KH2: Was really fun, but the difficulty and exploration was a little gimped. I would still recommend it, but it really depends on what kind of games you like.
@EP: I’ve never played a Zelda game besides Wind Waker, but enough people seem to like them. I’m sure Nintendo’ll tout it like it’s the second coming (which it probably will be for some. Remember how everybody reacted to Twilight Princess when it came out?)
- P5: YES PLEASE! To be perfectly honest, I’d be content if they just made P4 again, but with new characters and story and such (or maybe made a PSP version, so I can play it on the go. I know we’re getting P3P, and I love P3 to death, but new is always fun!). I doubt that’s what they’re doing, and I’m certainly not going to complain if they announce a HD, much improved version some time (I agree with SN, I’d look for it more at TGS than E3), but to be honest, I play the series for the characters and story more than the graphics.
- Never played DMC4. Finished 1, played a little bit of 2, but put it down because it was boring. Played most of the way through 3 (like up until the last level), but then got distracted by something and never went back, for some reason. Never played 4. If the series gets the “reboot” treatment, though, I’d be willing to give it a shot.
- I think KH:BBS will tide me over until KH3 comes out. To be honest, I’m not quite sure where they’ll go with the main KH storyline after the end of 2 (unlike at the end of 1, where it was pretty obvious). I’m looking forward to it, to be sure, but I don’t mind the side/back stories in the mean time, especially since people seem to be enjoying BBS.
Wow…Riddles, you really came through this week! Thanks buddy!
And SN, I know that NO work has been done on KH3, but that doesn’t mean that they’re above a teaser trailer of just CG footage. But speaking of Vs XIII, I’d love to see info on that.
I’m not really that interested about any of the XIII projects after XIII proper …
