GamesCom 2009: Three trailers you should watch

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

So, GamesCom isn’t the grandest affair to be spoken of in the gaming hemisphere, but nonetheless, we’ve had some interesting stuff come out of it thus far. The PS3 Slim was announced, a PS3 price cut was announced, and… uh… the PS3 slim was announced!

Anyway. A few quality trailers for some high-profile games have surfaced as well, and here are my top three. (Read: the only three I’ve watched. Granted, not many more have been shown, but still.)

Mass Effect 2. Man, I need to finish the first one, because everything I see for the upcoming sequel gives me chills. Especially odd considering how lukewarm I am about the original game. (Hence why it remains unfinished.)

Heavy Rain
Heavy Rain. Man, I need to finish Indigo Prophecy. I know the concept of a game composed largely of quick-time events is a major turn off to a lot of people, but Indigo Prophecy is such a unique, mind-blowing experience that it can hardly be judged for its use of quick-time sequences. And Heavy Rain looks to be upping the ante in every way. Can. Not. Wait.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Man, I need to finish the first game. Of course, I need a working PS3 to do that. Maybe if I finish the first one I’ll understand why Nathan is so strangely melodramatic in this trailer. Ah well, he’s a badass however you slice it.

Huh. I noticed a disturbing trend over those last three paragraphs. Did you?

Oh, and all of those trailers are courtesy of GameTrailers. You likely figured that out already, but I figured I should touch all my bases.

GamesCom 2009: PSP Minis

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

minis
During their GamesCom 2009 press conference, Sony announced that a new section of the PlayStation Store entitled “Minis” would launch on October 15.

What this is, essentially, is a collection of smallish, more casual games that can be purchased on the cheap. Among the games that have been revealed already are Fieldrunners, Sudoku, and Pacman Championship Edition. While Sony made no mention of a price range, PocketGamer is reporting that they will be priced at 1, 2, and 5 euros – which would more than likely translate to $1, $2, and $5 USD. (Keep in mind that nothing has been confirmed, however.)

The reason why this announcement interested me enough to write about is because it smacks of an attempt to compete with the iPhone. And, honestly, it’s hardly a secret that Sony has been promoting their upcoming PSP Go as a competitor to Apple’s massively popular handheld device. Personally, I think it’s a futile endeavor, but features like this are certainly a step in the right direction.

GamesCom 2009: The PS3 Slim

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

PS3slim
In a surprise to no one, the PS3 Slim was officially announced at Sony’s GamesCom 2009 presser. What came as a bit more of a surprise (to me, at least) was the announcement that it was being released in conjunction with a $100 price cut. That’s right, Sony is giving us a smaller, more efficient console for less money.

The PS3 Slim will be available starting the first week of September, so we won’t be waiting long. It will be 33 percent smaller than the current PS3 model, and 36 percent lighter. It will pack a 120 GB hard drive, and retail for $299. Almost sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it?

Wondering how they managed to knock a whole $100 off the price tag? Yeah, so am I, especially after what Sony’s CEO said about a month ago concerning a price cut. Speaking to Reuters, Howard Stringer flatly stated: “I would lose money on every PlayStation I make – how’s that for logic.”

comparison
Clearly, then, Sony has managed to reduce manufacturing costs with the PS3 Slim. Obviously a small console requires less raw material to produce, but there’s more to it than that. Speaking to Kotaku, SCEA’s Director of Hardware Marketing, John Koller, revealed three key changes in the PS3 Slim’s design. First, the Slim’s Cell processor has been reduced from 65 nanometers to 45. A new cooling system has been implemented (which, presumably, won’t be as heavy-duty has the one in place for the current models.) Last, the Slim features a new power draw. While Koller stated that these changes reduced the manufacturing costs of the system, he would not reveal whether or not Sony would still lose money in the process. Personally, I’m going to take his lack of comment as a “sadly, yes.”

Koller also frankly stated that the PS3 Slim would not feature backwards compatibility, describing it as “off the table.” Damn. Aside from that, the PS3 Slim will be short one other feature (though I doubt people will miss it nearly as much): the ability to install a different Operating System, such as Linux. Somewhere, approximately forty-seven nerds are sobbing.

Firmware 3.0
While Firmware Version 3.0 will be released on September 1st, early adopters of the Slim will have to download it themselves for whatever reason, as it won’t be pre-installed. For those interested in learning more about 3.0, check out this video. I generally don’t pay much attention to these things, but 3.0 actually looks pretty sweet. I’d recommend giving the video a look.

I don’t even own one yet, but I’m very impressed with the PS3 Slim thus far. Sony is giving us all nearly the features and all the power that the current model has at a lower price. The fact that it’s in a smaller, more attractive casing just sweetens the deal. And in a sense, this redesign represents Sony’s one last burst of speed in the race towards… not being in last place. Will it be enough to push them past the Xbox 360? Frankly I’m not so sure, but it gives them a fighting chance.

It’s My Birthday. Truly.

I was originally going to have a full post taunting Riddles about how I beat inFAMOUS – yet another PS3 exclusive – before he did. But I’ve put in so many snide remarks already, that I’d be beating that long-dead horse.

Instead, I should properly introduce myself during my week. Talk about the girly games I like, and all that shit.

Wait, this’ll work out perfectly. I’ll countdown my top 5 games of all time, one game at a time, ending on Sunday. Usually I don’t like to include current-ish games, but fuck that shit.
Here goes!

commander5 – Mass Effect
Never since Shadow of the Colossus had I been so quickly absorbed into a game’s world. Recently I’ve skimped on exploring towns in RPGs, but I spent hours and hours in The Citadel in Mass Effect’s opening. Enough has been said about the incredible dialogue system, but I agree with all the praise, and I thought the combat was engaging and rewarding. I only played as an adept though, and anytime I’m given awesome powers in a video game, I’m bound to be more forgiving. Sure, the menus are cluttered as fuck, and people take issue with the side-quests, but that’s easy to overlook given the personality, depth, and just pure fun the game is. Mass Effect is the best full retail game I have played this generation, and single-handedly made me interested in Western RPGs. It needs more time to sink in, so we’ll see how long it stands up against other nostalgic giants lower down my list (like Star Fox 64 and Kingdom Hearts), but I have a feeling it’s going to hold up. Now that you bastards can COMMENT, feel free to do so with your thoughts on Mass Effect and maybe your top 5 game of all time.
King Ethos OUT!

Are you ready to comment?

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

Because as of RIGHT NOW, you can do just that. On any post from here on out, and a few of our older ones as well. (Like the most recent 10 or so.)

Keep it civil. Keep it clean-ish. And above all, keep it… intelligent.

BLOO-YA!

My time has come, folks!
The PS3’s time has come!
Maybe I just beat inFAMOUS and Uncharted within the same week when I don’t even own a PS3, but it doesn’t make me any less excited to hear that the PS3 Slim is now official! With a $100 price cut to boot!
I truly feel that 2010 will be a turn-around year for Sony. I barely hear any jokes about the Playstation being..well…a joke, anymore, and with incredible exclusives already out (two of which I just mentioned) and a massive line-up coming up, the 360 should be feeling a little less comfortable.
Even earlier this year, I would argue with The Broken Finger about how the PS3 didn’t have all that much going for it, but now I’ve been itching to get my hands on one. I’m glad I waited.
With a cheaper, smaller, still fully featured PS3 the same price as a far less decked out, far more breakable 360, the tables are turning.
Oh, and do I need to mention:
-Gran Turismo 5
-Uncharted 2
-The Last Guardian
-God of War 3

Yup, it definitely is King Ethos Week.
I’m excited enough to post a picture of me with rubber dice up my nose.
yup
How’s THAT for an update, Corner Hawk?

‘Twas the Night before GamesCom…

…and the PS3 slim rumors are out in full force.

Earlier today, Kmart ran an ad promoting a new PS3 with a “new low price” to boot. It’s since been pulled, but here’s the image below, courtesy of Kotaku:

Huh.

Huh.

And if you love Kotaku as much as I do, take a look at this for some more PS3 Slim buzz.

In case you haven’t pieced it together yourself, I’ll give ya the down-low: the entire world is preparing for the official announcement of the PS3 Slim. Sony’s GamesCom conference starts at 9:30 AM PST. I have no idea what that is in CST, and I’m too tired to figure it out. If I manage to drag my ass out of bed before 3PM, I might post about it tomorrow. Today. Whatever. It’s late. Goodnight.

Ha ha ha ha ha…

Joke’s on YOU, Riddles! I LOVE that picture of me.

WELCOME, CRETINS! Welcome to King Ethos Week!
Usually I seem a meek individual, clinging to my girlish love for Flower and Zelda, but given the smallest amount of power, I go on a drunken rage.
Well that’s not really true.
Anyway, this is my proper introduction post, but I’ve got to go get to sleep early for now, so you can expect your fully pictured post tomorrow in which I talk about how I beat another PS3 exclusive game before Riddles.
Oh man, I’m going to love this week.
Did I mention it’s my birthday on Wednesday?
Until tomorrow, don’t forget to check up the News Roundup. Just click the link on the sidebar!

Okay, I’ll do a proper King Ethos thing later on, but even though this is a small sample size, read these hilarious failure rate stats:
It’s a coinflip for your XBox!

Aaaand my week is over.

Monday, August 17th, 2009

Since Ethos is not here to introduce his OWN WEEK, I’ll do it for him.

And it won’t be pretty.

All hail your "king"

I could have done far worse. He should be thankful.

All hail your “king.”
