Hey! Look! Listen!

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Another Tuesday, another edition of Hey! Look! Listen! Routine, routine, beautiful routine. Helps to keep us all in the loop and out of trouble.

A certain Dead Space: Extraction was released today. I’ve yet to go snag a copy, but I’ll be doing that later today, and then sitting down with it tonight. This means I’ll have to momentarily put down Modern Warfare, which I just picked up for the first time yesterday. Yes, I know, I have a bad habit of letting critically acclaimed titles sit unplayed for years. I like to call it “sequel panic,” actually; the threat of an oncoming sequel is often what motivates me to play a game.

Moving along:

Uncharted 2 Multiplayer Demo Available to Public
Grrr. I hate Naughty Dog for this. I know the multiplayer modes are the most prominent new feature of Uncharted 2, but that doesn’t mean I’m excited for them. Uncharted doesn’t NEED multiplayer. Even if it’s GOOD multiplayer. The Uncharted experience is about the characters, storyline, and gameplay, not shootouts. Shootouts are PART of the gameplay, yes, but ONLY a part.

And now I’m just ranting. Despite my misgivings, the demo sounds like quite a bang for your buck, including four different maps, four competitive modes, and two co-operative modes. All that for the low, low price of zero dollars. I will PROBABLY download it and give it a try. Maybe. Possibly. We’ll see.

No Plans for a Modern Warfare 2 Demo
More demo news! Or lack thereof, I suppose. Activision has NO PLANS to release a Modern Warfare 2 demo. Damn. Oh well. I suppose I can forgive them, since I doubt the game will be all THAT much different from the original Modern Warfare. And they know everyone’s going to buy it anyway, so why waste their time?

The Old Republic Beta Descends
What the… MORE demo news? Okay, this isn’t technically a demo, but it’s similar. If you wanna be part of the initial beta testing for BioWare’s upcoming Star Wars MMO, then hit this link.

Actually, if you hit that link you’ll be taken to a placeholder explaining that the site is down for “adjustments” due to the “overwhelming” response that the beta test signup received. But they’re working on it, so there’s a good chance that at the time you’re reading this, it’s back up and running.

Oh Hey, There WAS a Final Fantasy XIII Trailer at TGS
And damn, this thing is LONG. Seven full minutes of pure Final Fantasy XIII goodness. There are battles, cutscenes, and tons of Japanese dialogue that YOU won’t be able to understand! Oh, and there’s also this new chick I haven’t seen before. She had crazy hair. I thought it was kinda hawt. In any case, head to GameTrailers and check it out for yourself.

That’s enough for today. Time to go score some food, a copy of Extraction, and then head to work.

One Hour In…

…to Kingdom Hearts: Dumb Name. I was told the beginning was a lot of insulting tutorials, and while that’s very much true, the gameplay is promising, and I’m excited to dive into the more lengthy missions. I also have thoughts on the original Kingdom Hearts that I’ll post later as well because they have relevance to my impressions of Dumb Name. I also playing a surprising 2 or 3 hours of it last night. Anyway, lunch time.

Very dramatic, yes. A good and bad thing.

So I Finally Finished Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune

It took me some time, but it was well worth the effort. Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune is the best action-adventure title I’ve played this generation, and in fact, one of the best games period.

Few other games can rival Uncharted in terms of sheer overall production quality. There’s not a loose bolt or rusty nail to be found in Uncharted’s design and execution. The game is a graphical powerhouse, and easily my pick for best-looking game this generation. The gameplay is a perfect blend of combat, platforming, and puzzle solving,; each and every one of these aspects are fun to play, and control fantastically.

But it isn’t just razor-sharp mechanics that make Uncharted what it is. I like to describe the game as the closest thing to Indiana Jones the gaming world has ever seen, and that’s quite a compliment. The likable characters, fantastic dialogue, and fast-paced, thrilling narrative give the game the game a summer blockbuster quality – and frankly, I found Uncharted a more entertaining experience than any summer blockbuster I’ve seen in a number of years.

I could go on for days, but seeing as how the game is two years old, I think a full review might be a tad redundant. Suffice to say, I’m extremely excited for Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Although, unlike the many other sequels set for release this holiday season, I’m unsure as to how such a flawless experience could be improved. Regardless, I can’t wait to be back in Drake’s shoes once more.
Uncharted 2 has officially replaced Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed 2 as my most anticipated game of 2009. In fact, I’ll be quite interested indeed in seeing how the two compare.

Could Uncharted be the definitive action-adventure franchise of this hardware generation? In my eyes, that title belonged to the Prince of Persia trilogy last generation, but Ubisoft definitely lost that honor with the recent series reboot. The first Assassin’s Creed was a beautiful, but flawed experience; however, the upcoming second entry might make quite a case for the franchise. But then, aside from all that we’ve seen already, it’s important to remember that a certain God of War has yet to make an appearance since the hallowed PS2 days…

It begins…

Yes, I’m getting Kingdom Hearts: Dumb Name tomorrow (or like a reader put it, Kingdom Hearts: Big Ass Fraction), and I realized that it’s been so long since KHII came out, and although I’ve replayed both games, since, I’ve sort of left that world. I couldn’t stay as hyped for future iterations for the series as I was when I first discovered the secret movie, if I did I’d go crazy.
Therefore, this DS game sorta creeped up on me. I am going to be playing and posting impressions throughout the week, yes, but I finally got a lot of my games back from my brother in MontrĂ©al so I thought I’d throw in the original Kingdom Hearts. This is a series that, although I really do adore it, the last time I played it I also thought the Wii was going to lead the way into saving the world of video games.
Yup, a HELL of a lot has changed since then.
I’m excited and nervous, although few games that I replay ever disappoint me. More as the week develops!

I included Xenosaga to piss Riddles off.

Welcome to Kingdom Hearts Week…

Blue. Very... blue.

Blue. Very... blue.

That’s a really ominous font. I just realized that… ah well, it’s pretty.

My apologies. Welcome to yet another fun-filled week at Riddlethos.com. As you’ve likely gathered, our theme this week is Kingdom Hearts. Love it or hate it, you’ll just have to live with it. Me and Ethos both love the series, as I’m sure many of you do.

What should you expect from this week? Well, a certain Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 days hits stores tomorrow. Ethos will snap it up as soon as his grubby fingers can grab it, and then (presumably) write his impressions of the game. (Right Ethos?)

Just kidding, we’ve actually already discussed this extensively! Unfortunately we will NOT be bringing you dual-impressions this week, because I’m passing on 358/2 Days in favor of Dead Space: Extraction. Blasphemy, I know; especially during Kingdom Hearts Week. But I’m super-excited for Extraction, and 358/2 Days (God what a dumb name) just hasn’t piqued my curiosity. Hopefully, Ethos will be able to change my mind.

Anyway. I totally just beat Uncharted. More on that tomorrow, it’s late. Goodnight fools!

Ahhh, Yes….
