I Play More PS3 Than Riddles…

Sunday, August 9th, 2009

…and I don’t even own one! Ha ha ha ha!
Yes, I just beat Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune in a single sitting.
It. Was. Awesome.
I’m so excited for the sequel now, and it’s getting more and more ridiculous that I don’t own my own PS3 yet.
Anyway, I’m surprised Uncharted didn’t get more credit for having absolutely fantastic voice acting and dialogue. If any of you saw the featurettes, you’d know that they took a lot of the actual voice work from the elaborate motion capture scenes. The voice actors would act out the scenes with each other with set pieces and full out blocking. The result was extremely effective, and it’s little wonder the characters felt so alive. Obviously the environment in which actors get to record makes a world of difference.
Anyway, the game rocks for many more reasons than that, but if you want a review, go to the 329875392752301432309 other sites that will also tell you it’s awesome. Anyway, if you couldn’t tell that I liked it from all of that, here’s a masterpiece of a valdalized jpeg that sums up how I feel about the badass lead character.

Launch “Week”?

Saturday, August 8th, 2009

This has been a very long first theme week. Usually they will last actual weeks, not arbitrary blocks of time. Anyway, consider yourselves very lucky that you didn’t get another drunk Ethos post last night. I don’t think that should become a feature. Anyway, we’ll be posting our first News Roundup in the coming days, but until then, although it’s lovely to see Riddles posting again, I think this site has gone far too long without a ridiculous picture, so here’s something that was requested. You’re welcome, Andy.

So, I was going write up some impressions of Arkham Asylum…

Saturday, August 8th, 2009

…but then it turned out I couldn’t download the demo. Why? Well, two reasons really:

1. My PS3 is a useless, freezy brick.
2. Xbox LIVE, for some entirely FUCKED up reason, requires a Gold subscription to download newly-released demos.

I’ve never liked the fact that Microsoft makes their customers pay for something as basic and fundamental as simple online play, but I can kinda see where people come from when they make the argument that they’re “paying for the stability.” Okay. Fine. But why the hell do I have to pay $50 a year to download demos on release day when I can do it for free on PSN? The “stability” argument really isn’t going to fly; it’s nothing more than a blatant penalization, and I do not appreciate it. At all.

To be perfectly honest, it makes me want a Gold subscription less. In my mind, refusing to pay Microsoft that measly $50 is a way of sticking it to the man. And that makes me feel big.

I’m pathetic, I know. But I’m still not buying a Gold subscription.

Announcement of an Announcement Soon to Come: Final Fantasy XIII

Saturday, August 8th, 2009

According to Square Enix’s president Yoichi Wada, his company will be making an announcement regarding the release date of Final Fantasy XIII “in a few weeks.” (Kotaku.) Yep. That’s what he said.

This, of course, is likely only for the Japanese release of the game, which has been vaguely pegged as “Winter 2009″ in the past. But y’know, slap a good six months or so on top of that and you’ll have a rough idea of when we’ll be seeing it stateside. As for everyone else, well, you’ll just have to hope for the best.

Why is this news? Because its FINAL FANTASY XIII, DAMMIT.

Pssst: I’m gonna go ahead and guess that “in a few weeks” actually means “at the Tokyo Game Show,” which takes place September 24-27. So. More like a few months. But the fact that they do, in fact, plan on releasing a release date is exciting. Pathetically so, really.

Place Yer Bets!

Friday, August 7th, 2009

Okay, I’ve got a thing to go to tonight, and I didn’t play anything yesterday and I don’t give two shits about anything in gaming news today, so instead I’ll suggest the following:
When do you think the gdmfPS3 Slim is coming out?
I think it’ll be announced in the last week of August or first week of September and then released VERY soon after it is announced. Like, within a week.
What do you think?
Place your bets at ethos@riddlethos.com.
Oh, and maybe you’ll get a hilarious photoshop later. I got a request from someone…

It’s true.

Anyway, I’m VERY tired right now, and even though I’d love to write something special for you, I’m afraid I lack the mental capacity. Tomorrow, perhaps, it will return to me.

So, essentially, I’m just posting to assure you all that I yet live. And admittedly, I just don’t fancy the idea of going two whole days without my name appearing on the index. It seems I’m a tad narcissistic as well.

I will now go fall asleep in front of Scrubs, and hopefully locate some food in this place.

Why Yes, I’ll Spend More Money!

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

moneynoAlright alright alright, after the announcement of which games are coming out for Xbox Live’s new Games on Demand service, I need to make a list of where all my money is being drained to in the near future.

-Kameo: Elements of Power (Games on Demand)
-Viva Pinata (Games on Demand)
-Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise (Games on Demand)
-’Splosion Man (XBLA)
-A god damned mother fucking PS3 Slim (Hopefully soon)
-Uncharted 1 & 2 (After I get the gdmfPS3 Slim)
-Forza 3 (Xbox360)
-Kingdom Hearts: Dumb Name (DS)
-Prolly a bunch more XBLA games.

Goodbye money. It was nice to pretend I had you.
Oh, and I believed for a second that this was Skies of Arcadia 2, but that just proves my optimistic idiocy.

Browser Update

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Congrats! Since launch, the vast majority of our users have been using Firefox. About 60%, if my memory serves me correctly. But the larger success is that the other 40% is NOT Internet Explorer. In fact, there are almost an identical number of people using Chrome visiting our site as there are people using the MONSTROSITY that is Internet Explorer. Keep it up, because not only does our site look worse in Internet Explorer, but that browser also is horrible. I would rather browse on a fresh pile of horse shit.
Thanks for reading Riddlethos!

In the Forza boat.

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

So because I plan to buy a PS3 the moment the Slim is released (ANNOUNCE THE DAMN THING ALREADY), I’ve been thinking more and more as if I already own one. Like I said, I even bought inFAMOUS the other day in Murfreesboro: City of Champions. Anyway, aside from getting more excited for the obvious choices – The Last Guardian, Uncharted 2, Gran Turismo 5, God of War 3 – Another wagon of hype has surprised me even more than my recent Forza 3 obsession.

FFXIVYes, I really want to play Final Fantasy XIV. This is only a surprise when you’re reminded that it’s a MMO in the vein of FFXI and World of Warcraft; a genre that I’ve typically stayed away from. I avoided all MMOs for a long time because they didn’t really appeal to me, and I even gave WoW a fair shake one time and shrugged at the experience. But something about this PS3 exclusive (at least for consoles and at least for now) really speaks to me. Maybe it’s because I’ll have the chance to start along with everyone else for once, maybe it’s because they’re making it easier to solo, but either way, I want this game. GIMME.
