A Game I Can’t Bring Myself to Care About

Monday, August 24th, 2009

I talked before about how I’m surprisingly excited for the upcoming driving sim, Forza 3, and the second Final Fantasy MMO, Final Fantasy XIV Online. It’s not surprising because they look like bad games. Quite the contrary, they’re both getting positive previews. More surprising that the driving sim and MMO genres are two that I’ve generally avoided. Sure, I played a bit of Gran Turismo on the original Playstation, but I could hardly be called a fan of the genre.
Anyhoo, given all that I thought that I might, in turn, be interested in the mega-hyped Star Wars: The Old Republic.
No dice, soldier.
I saw the trailer and felt like it was devoid of personality. I then saw a few early previews and was unimpressed with the art style, but I didn’t want to write it off just like that. Then I saw a 20 minute preview and it confirmed my apathy. (IGN)
I didn’t care about the planets, the scenarios, the art style, the battle system, any of it. And I love Star Wars.

Meh

Meh

Perhaps one of more ironic comments I heard was when IGN editor, Daemon Hatfield said the trailer was better than any of the original Star Wars movies. And while Episode I was stupid, at least it had personality. The Old Republic feels so sterile to me that the action-packed trailer was boring.
Also, as much as I love boobs, there is such thing as TOO many huge-boobed women. Every single female has the exact same character model: Way too thin and unnaturally large breasts. I can’t take the game seriously.
Anyway, I know half the world is hyped for the game, I just really can’t bring myself to give a flying fuck.

Project Team ICO Week

Monday, August 24th, 2009

Well here is the first non-completely-narcissistic week. I gotta say that I’m actually pretty excited. I’m naturally narcissistic anyway, so working double-time like that was a little difficult.
Anyway, to celebrate Team ICO Week, Riddles and I are starting a little project.
I realized that I have only played ICO through once, and – this is a little hard to admit – half of it was beat by my friend as we played through it together. I’m a little tough on ICO when I talk about it given my actual history with it. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the game, but I criticize a lot of aspects that, to be honest, I don’t entirely remember.
THEREFORE this is my round-a-bout way of telling you all that I’m going to be replaying the game this week and posting about it every day.
When Riddles heard this, he decided he’d replay Shadow of the Colossus. I know that he shares my love for the game, but I’m not sure if he has played it as often or as recently as I have. I know that he’s not particularly the type to replay games, so perhaps he hasn’t…

EITHER WAY. Look forward to our daily updates as we replay these classics. We’ll also, of course, be talking about our thoughts concerning the upcoming Last Guardian.
