Return to Normalcy?

Sunday, June 27th, 2010

shooting the shitThere will be no Sunday Soapbox this week because I didn’t play anything, and I haven’t been in my own city – let alone my own province – for the majority of the week. Therefore my current thoughts on video games are: let me play them again.

I’m sticking with Puzzle Quest 2 Week even though it doesn’t come out until June 30th, and only on the Xbox 360. Fuck that shit. Oh well, it’s all I got. I go back to work tomorrow, but I also go back to playing video games, so you’ll be able to count on your Riddlethos fix although sans le Riddles. We’re supposed to talk soon about how his hiatus is going, but he’s not answering my texts or e-mails. Or well, let him be, I suppose. He’ll come wandering back.

Oh, and Hey! Look! Listen! Audio Edition update: Matti and I have tentatively set this weekend as a recording time, so look forward to that. Again, there may or may not also be a Pogo involved.

Finally, I’m seeing some Nintendo stuff tomorrow. I have no idea what, or how much I’ll be allowed to talk about, so that’s why I haven’t been hyping it up, but I thought I’d let you guys know that I…er…may or may not have impressions tomorrow. Let me say straight up, however, that I fully do not expect to see the 3DS there. I wish.

Alright, that’s it. See you wonderful Riddlethosians tomorrow.

Tingle! Tingle! Kooloo-Limpah! #009

Saturday, June 26th, 2010

Yesyes, I haven’t done one of these since late May, I’m well aware. But hey, here’s one now!

More PS2 games in HD to collect on the PS3

Yup, although an ICO/SotC collection was not announced at E3, a Sony head honcho, Shuhei Yoshida, confirmed that more PS2 collections were making their way to the PS3 in HD on Blu-Ray. I’m more than okay with that, because the announced Sly Cooper collection got my attention at E3, and those are PS2 games that I never would have played otherwise. No specifics were announced, but Yoshida talked about the positive reaction to the God of War collection and how he now hears a lot of requests.

Another point of note is that Yoshida was asked about the possibility of PS2 games coming to the PSN. His reply seemed to go away from the direction of PS2 HD collections, and more in the direction of making the PS2 library available for PS3 owners. Something I’m sure they’ve been thinking about the moment they axed backwards compatibility. Yeah, I’ll pay for collections (especially on games I don’t already own), but I’m not going to pay money to rebuy my PS2 games. I’m only stupid enough to do that with Final Fantasy IX.

Final Fantasy XIII Versus Final Fantasy Versus XIII?

Bah-hahaha, it’s Squeenix’s fault I can make such a ridiculous headline like that. But seriously, while it’s hard to recover optimism out of that landslide of disappointment that was Final Fantasy XIII, these new screens that have surfaced look pretty gorgeous. Not just that, but it’s the fact that Tetsuya Nomura is saying that the game is open world with roaming monsters. Therefore I’m pretty sure it will not be Tunnel: The Game: The Sequel.

Still, we know nothing about the battle system, or mechanics, or anything really, so I really shouldn’t be hyping this up to be an urban, adult Kingdom Hearts. Still, redemption for FFXIII is way too appealing, and so my brain will likely hold out hope for this until we have more details.

PSN and XBLA Are Trying Really Hard to Get You to Cancel Cable

Or me, at least. With ESPN free for XBox Live Gold subscribers (it just became worth it again), and now Hulu in talks with PSN, I can’t imagine any reason why I should be paying for TV. Now, Hulu has been rumoured to be in cahoots with XBox before and nothing’s happened yet, so who knows when this PSN deal will materialize, but if it’s free with PSN+ then that’s $100 a year instead of close to the same price a month for all the TV I’d want to watch anyway. Game consoles are the new TV.

Infinity Ward Wants to be Your BFF

Don’t really want to go into detail about this – read the linked source if you do – but I wanted to mention this at least. Infinity Ward (not Respawn) is embracing the social internet and listening to tweets and Facebook comments and even opening up a phone line to call or text with concerns or suggestions. I know other companies do this to some degree as well, I just thought it was cool.

EA Loves the PS3, but Especially Loves the XBox, but Especially the PS3

I like this article because it’s EA trying to pick favourites without upsetting Microsoft too much. Essentially, EA’s COO, John Schappert, spends his time talking about how well the PS3 is doing and how much EA loves it, but throws Microsoft a bone or two just in case the tides turn. My favourite quote was the following,

We have high hopes on the PlayStation 3 this year. Again, we like them all, but PlayStation 3 is doing very strong right now

Bah-hahaha! “We like them all”. It really is like a parent talking about their children.

See! I had a lot of shit to write. 5! 5 shit to write. That’s a lot for me, so I hope you forgive the delay. As for now? I’m hungry. See you fuckers later.

Tingle Coming Late Tomorrow

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Bed now. Flight tomorrow, but there’s stuff I want to talk about, so check back late tomorrow night or Saturday morning. See you all then.

*Update* I’m home, sunburned, and exhausted. I’ve got my stories picked out, but the feature will go up tomorrow.

Scatter Storming. Issue #033

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

Hey folks!

While I haven’t been up to my usual gaming habits this week, I thought it had been way too long since I treated you all with the stupidest column known to this site: Scatter Storming. Let’s just dive in and see what I write.

This cover is too good for this issue -
Because I have so much nothing to say about gaming today, this classy looking cover is not only completely irrelevant, but also misleading. It paints a picture of serenity, thoughtfulness, creativity, and even nostalgia, but this issue is nothing like that. Or so I assume, I’m already struggling for things to say. Don’t worry, the full out magazine covers with the headlines aren’t gone for good, but I didn’t want to ruin the composition of this image.

Mario Galaxy 2 never stops being fun -
Like I’ve mentioned, the only real gaming I’ve been doing since Friday is playing Super Mario Galaxy 2 with my girlfriend. It’s surprising how much fun every level continues to be whether I’m playing, watching, or helping out as second player. The musical cues are more inspiring because now they conjure memories, and progression is just as exciting and addictive. It makes me want to boot up my save and work on the 120 green stars. Or 117, really because I did get three.

Maybe I can finally beat FFIX again -
Another thing I’ve been mentioning is that I forgot my PSP at home which is an extra bummer because I just downloaded Final Fantasy IX onto the thing. I start the game all the time, but I haven’t been completing the game at the rate I used to because when I sit down to play console games, it’s generally a bit of a bitch to play something on my PS2. Now the game can move into my portable gaming arena, and if I’m almost done Brave Story – a game I like but certainly don’t adore – then I can absolutely beat my favourite game again. Still, speaking of Brave Story, I would like to complete that and Lunar at some point before my library becomes overwhelmed again.

How’s that? -
Have I written enough yet? I’m not really excited for any upcoming games. I mean, I’m excited for practically everything announced at Nintendo’s conference, but nothing is really coming up in the near future except for Metroid: Other M which only has my casual eye. There are rumours that the 3DS could actually launch this holiday season, but not only am I not holding my breath for that, but it’s a ways off anyway.

Hey! Look! Listen! Audio Edition returning? -
Yes, it’s been far too long since our premiere podcast. It was a ridiculous romp filled with inappropriate digressions and it’s a shame that there’s only been one. I’m looking to change that. If you haven’t noticed, I’m hoping that Riddles’ sabbatical will serve as a sort of inspiration for me. Because he’ll be gone for a little bit, I want to not only pick up the slack, but try to push forward too. Matti, aka Constipated Cow has already helped out, and I think I want to use him as my go-to guy and try to organize a second iteration. And who knows? Maybe the Dirty Polack himself will make another appearance.

Alright, that’s enough content, right guys? I return to Toronto on Friday, and although I have a very busy workweek right after, I plan on staying consistent for you guys, and I might even have a few tricks up my sleeves. Maybe a few previews of a few Nintendo games announced at E3? Not making promises, but anything can happen!

A Life Without Video Games

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

I’m having a great time here, and that title isn’t exactly true because Erika and I have been playing Super Mario Galaxy 2, but apart from that, it’s interesting to take a look at myself when I’m without games for even just a week. I forgot my PSP at home, and iPod games don’t count (I’ve only been playing Sudoku anyway). So often my instinct is to play games, and when I don’t have that as an option so far I’ve only felt mild annoyance. Mostly because my only opportunities when I’d want to play games is when I’m in my hotel after a long day and I’m really tired and just want to sleep anyway.

The point is I can’t really tell if I’m appreciating the break from games, or if I miss them. I don’t feel gamer fatigue, but I suppose I’m just not very excited about any games that will be released in the near future. Still, I wish I had FFIX on my PSP here to play myself to sleep with.

As you can tell, I really have nothing to say, but I wanted to touch base with you guys because I’m so busy this week. And because Riddles is on sabbatical, I can’t very well expect him to pick up the slack! The man needs his beauty rest. Anyhoo, do you guys miss video games when you’re away?

Spam Comment Roundup

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

Yes folks, I’m still busy-go-nuts visiting my lovely girlfriend in the closeby province of New Brunswick, but I thought I’d stop by to start a feature I’ve wanted to do for a while.

Riddlethos.com gets a very healthy stream of spam comments which is not uncommon, nor is the very effective spam filter that we use. Now, I choose to screen the comments instead of automatically deleting them, and while there have only been a few very rare cases of the filter turning down a legitimate comment, I’ve begun to look forward to the screening process for a new reason. Some of these comments are amazing. Unfortunately, I’ve deleted a lot of the best ones, but they keep coming in, so I’m going to post the two good ones I have now and update this segment whenever I get a healthy portion of hilarious or overly-complimentary spam comments.

1 – Car Moving’s Conversation with a Ghost -
Tried to post to “Assassin’s Creed II Review: Everything is Permitted

First up we have a robot named “Car Moving”. Let me just post the quote before getting into it.

@Marco I know what your mean. In the current economy its hard to find a company to work for that pays good enough to live on and is stable . I have found that if you just work hard and are consistent you can succeed. Look at the writer of this article, they are clearly hard working and have just been consistent over time and are now enjoying at least what would appear as somewhat of a success. I would encourage everyone to just keep hustling and moving forward.

Oh, I love this comment. I understand that some spam comments will randomly choose a subject and hope it sticks to the who-knows-how-many blogs it posts to, but Car Moving is not only talking about something completely irrelevant, but he’s replying to a dude named Marco. Now Riddlethos doesn’t have thousands of unique commentors, but we have our fair share. There is nobody named Marco that I remember, and there certainly isn’t on that specific post. To top it all off, it is Car Moving’s advice that we all just continue to hustle.

2 – Beau Ziego’s Bedspread -
Tried to post to “The Dust Has Settled: Day 1 – Ethos

Beau Ziego is a spambot of few words, but gosh darn it if the thing isn’t poetic.
