So, I finally played some Xenosaga.

Sunday, September 6th, 2009

The odd couple.

The odd couple.

About four hours of Episode I, in fact. And I really must say: this is one game that, even eight years later, lives up to the memories I have of it. At least so far.

Xenosaga Episode I is every bit as epic now as it was before. The cutscenes are exteremely well-directed, well-written, and suprisingly well-acted. The quality of the voice acting is really pretty remarkable, given the time it was released. Just four hours in, and I’m hooked on the story yet again.

Aside from that, I still think the combat is a lot of fun. Traditional turn-based combat is the basis, but in combination with the button-based attacks, (ala Xenogears) and the ingenious Boost system, it becomes far deeper. Oh, and the game is actually quite challenging, which is a little detail I’d forgotten.

But now, alas, Xenosaga week has reached its conclusion. With a heavy heart I must bid farewell to one of my most beloved series, and forever lament the fact that its six-part projection was cut to three.

Ya hear me, Namco? Episode IV, plz?

Fine. How about Episodes I-III on Blu-Ray?

Yeah, I’m not getting my hopes up. But I can dream, right?

While You Were Out… – Xenosaga Week

Sunday, September 6th, 2009

So Xenosaga Week is coming to a close, and while Riddles spent the day playing Episode I of the series yesterday and he’ll probably have something to say about it, it is also time to wrap up the week and show you loyal readers some of the highlights.

-Riddles continues the Theme Week curse by not being able to play a Xenosaga game.

-I give some impressions of the Xenosaga soundtrack. I imply that there’s more to come, but the soundtrack didn’t hold my attention all that strongly. Perhaps that’s a bit of a review in itself.

-Riddles played Batman before me and talks about how he likes it (big surprise). He also reveals a bit about his childhood…

-I talk about the semi-regular features that have become fully regular features, and later on Riddles confirms our RSS feed.

-Riddles talks about his experience with Xenogears, comparing it with his knowledge and love for the Xenosaga series.

Of course, that’s not even half of what Riddlethos brought you this week, but it will bring you up to speed if you happened to miss most of the week. Bring on the most peculiar of all weeks coming up tomorrow!

And because the picture was such a hit last time…

What more could you want? Nate Liles?
Oh yes! Nate Liles is talked about!
NATE LILES!!

Also, the below picture will be explained…
It’s a wacky one this time, folks.

I’m Back!

Saturday, September 5th, 2009

Hey folks, I’ve been running around away from the…er…Riddlethos offices…yes…
Anyway, the point is I’m back and so you should see the most ridiculous News Roundup yet posted later on in the day.
The bad news? I left my DSi at Pogo’s so Mr. Cloud Man’s end may not be posted during Xenosaga week although the animation is very close to being finished.
If you’d like, you may scroll down to that “minor update” picture of the coal miner, because it applies.
But for now, that’s all I got! Suck it!

FUCK YES

Friday, September 4th, 2009

YES YES YES!

…oh, sorry. Well ladies and gents, it’s Friday night and I’m at my apartment all by myself. This happens with disturbing regularity, but tonight it’s okay. Know why?

Because after purchasing a laser-lens cleaning disc and running it on my PS2, I can now run Xenosaga: Episode I. Oh yes. It’s true. And you’d better believe I’m about to play the SHIT out of it.

I’ll let you know how it goes. For now I’ll leave you with this. I know this is Ethos’ gig, but I couldn’t resist.

Xenogears: Initial Impressions, Reminiscent Musings

Friday, September 4th, 2009

She always meant business.

She always meant business.

It’s been Xenosaga week for… almost a week now, and I’ve yet to say this simple thing: I absolutely love the Xenosaga trilogy. I still remember picking up the original Xenosaga on a whim, at my local GameCrazy, for $12.99. I didn’t know what to expect, but I figured I’d give it a try.

And the rest is history. The game changed my life. Since that day, the sci-fi opera told in Xenosaga has been counted among my favorite fiction stories of all time. As flawed as Episode II was I still loved it, and Episode III was such a perfect return to form that it’s impossible to stay mad at the series. While it treads onto the grounds of JRPG melodrama more than once, the Xenosaga trilogy tells a story so complex, gripping, desperate, and emotionally charged that it can’t be properly honored here.

For those unfamiliar with the tumultous history of the series, Xenogears was the “first” part of the saga, released on the PlayStation in 1998. (Fun fact: due to “sensitive religious issues,” the game almost did not see release in North America – and in order to publish it here, Square actually partnered with, of all companies, Electronic Arts.)

While Xenogears was clearly meant to be part of something bigger, a sequel was never made. However, four years later came Xenosaga, which showed hints of being a prequel series of some kind. Aesthetic and thematic similarities, coupled with the fact that the game shared the same writer/director as Xenogears (Tetsuya Takahashi) caused theories to run rampant. But after the first episode, Takahashi left the project, and the series was cut down from a projected six episodes to three. And it’s not showing any signs of returning. So, if there ever was a connection between Xenogears and Xenosaga, we’ll likely never know.

So did she, of course.

So did she, of course.

So, you’re likely wondering: after finally getting around to playing the game that started it all, what do I think?

Unfortunately it’s hard to say, seeing as how I’ve played about three hours of a game that will likely last for 50. But I can say this: while Xenogears feels distinct from the Xenosaga trilogy that came after it, it shares enough in common to make me wonder what could have been. Are these Gears the same as the E.S units that the heroes of Xenosaga used? Is Citan Uzuki a descendant of Shion’s family? Is this primitive world a result of the world-changing events at the end of Episode III? I recognize that the Xenosaga geek in me is probably projecting like crazy, but I really don’t care.

Like the Xenosaga series did years ago, Xenogears has already hooked me with its storyline. The opening hours are perfect, setting you up with just the right amount of character development, foreshadowing, and action. Like Xenosaga it tends to get a bit melodramatic, yet it’s believable at the same time. The english translation is a bit odd, though; it ranges from perfectly coherent to entirely non-sensible. Still, it’s a far cry better than, say, Final Fantasy VII. Oh, and the game features some gorgeous anime scenes with very solid voice acting, which is something I certainly wouldn’t have expected from a PlayStation RPG.

The combat system in Xenogears is a lot like the combat found in Xenosaga Episode I. But seeing as how Xenogears came first, I suppose it would be the other way around. It’s certainly not a problem to me, seeing as how Episode I had my favorite combat system in the series. (Episode II is just a sad story, and Episode III’s is just a tad too generic.) While it’s fairly standard turn-based combat at heart, it moves quickly and it’s fun to play around with. (And I’m a JRPG nerd who will never tire of turn-based combat.)

The game tends to be rather grim in nature.

The game tends to be rather grim in nature.

Weirdly enough, I really like the graphics in Xenogears. Perhaps because I’m playing it on my PSP, and the smaller screen makes things look crisper. The game features 2D sprites on top of fully 3D backgrounds, both of which look surprisingly impressive. It might just be the nostalgia factor that makes me love the sprites, but the three-dimensional environments are better than you’d expect for a PlayStation game.

And I can’t end this article without a shout-out to the immortal Yasunori Mitsuda, who is at his best yet again in Xenogears. Seriously, to hell with Chrono Trigger; this, along with Xenosaga Episode I, is his best work.

*braces for flames*

It’s been a while since I’ve played a JRPG all the way through – I believe Persona 4 was the last one – but Xenogears has my attention so far. I probably have no choice but to love the game, given my obsession with all things Xeno-related, but nonetheless I’m really enjoying it so far.

‘ELLO GUV’NAH! – September 4th 2009

Friday, September 4th, 2009

Here we go you glorious bastards (NOT A REFERENCE TO A MOVIE BECAUSE I KNOW HOW TO SPELL “BASTARDS”)! The first regularly scheduled ‘ELLO GUV’NAH comes as a present to everybody, except for the British people I offend. Let’s dive in.

batmanlogogameBatman: Arkham Asylum-
Yup, everybody loves this game. Riddles, abe80, The Broken Finger, Nate Liles. I can understand it, the controls are tight, the level design is well thought out, and Mark Hamill kills it as The Joker. And while I’m definitely quite enjoying it, the game can’t really hold my attention for more than an hour or so before I start shrugging my shoulders a bit. I don’t blame anybody for jizzing all over it, I just don’t feel exactly the same way. I’m glad I got it, though, and I hear the experience is pretty short, so I’m sure I’ll beat it.

Suikoden-
Suikoden_USThe one that you can get off of the PSN, not the DS one that I am very slowing inching towards defeating. Except for the item management system, I’m really enjoying this classic. It seems like Suikoden will be a series that I’m going to be getting into. Late in the game, perhaps, but there are at least a number of titles I can look forward to! In any case, this PSX original -besides having the greatest box art ever- is exciting so far and I’m not even at the point when I assume I’ll be in control of my own castle and commanding armies! I’m not really big on the whole 108 playable character hook, but like with Tierkreis I’m sure I’ll find the 10 or so that I really like and stick with them.

ff12_logoFinal Fantasy XII-
I have no idea what compelled me to pick up this title again. I was in the middle of a second playthrough that I stopped about 18 months ago and I’ve jumped right back in as if no time had passed. All this when I just got a PS3, have both modern HD systems and the new Metroid Trilogy for the Wii. Oh well, while I constantly wish for the graphics to look better -they were so good on the PS2 that it just ends up looking like a incredibly shitty PS3 game instead of a great looking PS2 game- the battle system is as addicting as ever, and the cutscenes still blow me away. Seriously, until Uncharted, no game rivaled FFXII in its scene direction, voice acting, and animation. What a waste that (excepting Balthier, Larsa, and maybe Fran) the characters were all boring sacks of shit. But seriously, while any conversation between Ashe and Basch might as well be about sawdust, I’m still glued to the TV. Let’s hope FFXIII combines X’s great story with XII’s great scene direction.

Flower-
flowerlogoYeah, I don’t care that I play this game all the time, this segment is about what I’ve been playing, and I’ve been playing Flower, goddamn it! After watching In Good Company, I felt the second dream was the perfect way to settle the residue emotions from the movie. With its grey beginnings and themes of colour and drab optimism, this level has definitely grown on me the most since I first discovered this game earlier this year. Later, I boosted an already great mood with the game’s perfect finale dream. Anyway, there’s only so much even I can say about this gem.

That’s it! That’s all I got! Suck it!

One More Thing…

We made it, folks.

Batman and Getting Beat Up

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

Well folks, I listened to some more of the soundtrack, but I think I’ll leave any posts that require thinking for tomorrow. Because:
1. I’m tired
2. I have games to play. (Like Batman)
3. I have other things to write
4. I was a bit of a prick to another guy who was being a bit of a prick on the streetcar and I almost got my ass kicked. That has left me in a bit of a weird mood.
See you tomorrow with AT LEAST an edition of ‘ELLO GUV’NAH. But you know you can expect more.

Hey! Look! Listen!

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

My God, I have to get my sleeping schedule under control. Waking up until 1:30 PM is NOT ideal for a productive day; no, not in the least. Of course, I was up until 4:30 in the damned morning, so I guess I couldn’t expect much else.

That aside, let’s do some HLL-ing!

New Assassin’s Creed II Trailer Shows Off New Combat
I can’t wait for Assassin’s Creed II. As of right now it is my most anticipated game of 2009, and this trailer has served only to whet my appetite further. It has actual (gasp) GAMEPLAY this time around, mostly highlighting the game’s revamped combat system. It looks like a more brutal, free-flowing combat style – similar to what they did in Prince of Persia: Warrior Within. And while there are plenty of things Ubisoft did wrong with Warrior Within, it can’t be denied that the new combat system was a huge improvement.

Okami Sequel to Hit DS, Expected to be Approximately 34231 Times Cuter
So, those rumors were true. An Okami sequel IS, in fact, in the works. However, it is not coming to the PlayStation 3, where it would surely be a graphical powerhouse. Instead, it is coming to the much more humble – but far more accessible – Nintendo DS. With the transfer to a Nintendo system comes the obligatory dose of cuteness, of course – for starters, the new protagonist is named Chibiterasu. (No, I’m not kidding.) Like the original game, players will use a magical paintbrush to solve puzzles and defeat enemies, but this time the brush will be controlled by the DS’s stylus pen. (No freakin’ duh.) The game is reportedly around 25 percent completed, and will be released in 2010.

So Yeah, Remember that Little Thing Called OnLive?
Personally I was hoping to never hear about this again, ever, but it seems that’s not to be. Just yesterday, on the official OnLive Blog, OnLive founder and CEO Steve Perlman announced that a Beta was being rolled out. So yeah, apparently they really are doing work on this thing. If you’re interested, you can still sign up. Let me know how it goes if you do.

And that’s all for today. I like to keep these things fairly brief, only touching on what really grabs my interest. But you know that already. Look for some Xenogears musings soon, and whatever other Xenosaga-related content we can come up with. Till then!
