2009 Game of the Year Nominees

Saturday, January 2nd, 2010

So… this is 2010, eh? Funny, it feels an awful lot like 2009.

But seeing that it’s only the second day, I suppose I can continue to give it the benefit of doubt.

So, have you all been enjoying our Best of 2009 picks so far? No? Well good, because they’re not over yet. Today, I have the pleasure of announcing the nominees for Riddlethos’ Best Game of 2009. They should hardly come as a surprise to anyone who follows our site at all, but nonetheless, here they are:

ac2logoAssassin’s Creed 2

Ubisoft’s second entry in their popular new franchise improves on the original game in practically every way. The result? A fantastic sandbox experience that leaves you hanging for the inevitable third entry.

arkhamlogoBatman: Arkham Asylum

Nobody really saw it coming, but for a multitude of reasons, here it is on our Best of 2009 nominations list. Batman: Arkham Asylum is the best licensed game ever made, and sure to be the start of a fantastic franchise.

I’m including this because Ethos told me to. I could copy/paste any one of the 9234 gushing posts he’s written about it, but I really don’t feel like it. It’s on our Best of 2009 Nominees list, so that should say enough. Right?

mw2logoModern Warfare 2

What list would be complete without the self-proclaimed “biggest game of 2009″? Lucky for us, Modern Warfare 2 actually lived up to its hype, and well-deserves a spot here.

uncharted2logoUncharted 2: Among Thieves

What can be said here that hasn’t been said a number of times already? Naughty Dog knocked it way out of the park with Uncharted 2, and both me and Ethan have been singing its praises for months now. So, if you’re surprised, you clearly haven’t been following the site long.

Place your bets, Riddlethosians. Best of 2009 Week will conclude tomorrow, with the sure-to-be-earth shattering final announement. Be there! Or… don’t. I really can’t threaten a consequence one way or the other.

Scatter Storming. Issue #014 “Don’t Fuck Up”

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

ss014Hey there!
Despite Riddles’ obsession with Winterscapes, and the noticeably cooler weather here in the Great White North, we only had snow once, and it was light and it is gone. Therefore my argument of “he should live in Toronto” is a little moot. Anyway, I’ve been training for a new position at work, and that’s been fun, but it’s also more noticeable when I fuck up, so I’ve been a little nervous. Anyway, let’s talk about my bizarre choice of games that I’ve been playing and thinking about.

God of War Collection, bitches! -
So I’m pretty sure I’ve almost beat the first God of War via the PS3. Fun stuff. My opinion remains the same. It’s cool, fun, and epic, but I wouldn’t heap the praise on in the same way that everybody else has. Still, I’m mildly committed to beating the collection by the end of the year. I never thought I’d say this, but the game might actually be too epic. Kinda like FFXII’s soundtrack.

Dragon Quest? -
Yeah, the series I don’t really care for. I’ve been playing V on the DS and strangely loving it and it’s made me had the desire to play DQVIII for the PS2. That has never happened before. If you know me, you know I’m lukewarm on that title. Weird.

Final Fantasy XIV beta -
I applied. Cross your fingers for me.

Call of Duty is fun to watch -
Seriously, I’ve wasted more hours watching my roommate play Modern Warfare 2 than most people spend playing it. I don’t know why gaming isn’t more of a spectator sport in North America.

I think I had more to say, but that’s really all I’ve been playing, and my eye hasn’t been on the news this week. Plus, I have a countdown list to get to. But anyway, I’ll leave you all with a very recent IM snippet with the one and only Riddles.

One of Two!

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

nsmbwI’m about to try out New Super Mario Brothers Wii. I’ll be back with impressions, to be sure. But that’s not it for this week! I’m also getting the chance to try out Link’s Choo Choo adventure this Thursday. It’s a bit of a Nintendo preview week for the Ethos half of Riddlethos. I hear Riddles is loving Modern Warfare 2, and you’ll probably be hearing from him soon, whether you want to or not.
I, for one, am curious.

Hey! Look! Listen!

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Another Tuesday, another edition of Hey! Look! Listen! Routine, routine, beautiful routine. Helps to keep us all in the loop and out of trouble.

A certain Dead Space: Extraction was released today. I’ve yet to go snag a copy, but I’ll be doing that later today, and then sitting down with it tonight. This means I’ll have to momentarily put down Modern Warfare, which I just picked up for the first time yesterday. Yes, I know, I have a bad habit of letting critically acclaimed titles sit unplayed for years. I like to call it “sequel panic,” actually; the threat of an oncoming sequel is often what motivates me to play a game.

Uncharted 2 Multiplayer Demo Available to Public
Grrr. I hate Naughty Dog for this. I know the multiplayer modes are the most prominent new feature of Uncharted 2, but that doesn’t mean I’m excited for them. Uncharted doesn’t NEED multiplayer. Even if it’s GOOD multiplayer. The Uncharted experience is about the characters, storyline, and gameplay, not shootouts. Shootouts are PART of the gameplay, yes, but ONLY a part.

And now I’m just ranting. Despite my misgivings, the demo sounds like quite a bang for your buck, including four different maps, four competitive modes, and two co-operative modes. All that for the low, low price of zero dollars. I will PROBABLY download it and give it a try. Maybe. Possibly. We’ll see.

No Plans for a Modern Warfare 2 Demo
More demo news! Or lack thereof, I suppose. Activision has NO PLANS to release a Modern Warfare 2 demo. Damn. Oh well. I suppose I can forgive them, since I doubt the game will be all THAT much different from the original Modern Warfare. And they know everyone’s going to buy it anyway, so why waste their time?

The Old Republic Beta Descends
What the… MORE demo news? Okay, this isn’t technically a demo, but it’s similar. If you wanna be part of the initial beta testing for BioWare’s upcoming Star Wars MMO, then hit this link.

Actually, if you hit that link you’ll be taken to a placeholder explaining that the site is down for “adjustments” due to the “overwhelming” response that the beta test signup received. But they’re working on it, so there’s a good chance that at the time you’re reading this, it’s back up and running.

Oh Hey, There WAS a Final Fantasy XIII Trailer at TGS
And damn, this thing is LONG. Seven full minutes of pure Final Fantasy XIII goodness. There are battles, cutscenes, and tons of Japanese dialogue that YOU won’t be able to understand! Oh, and there’s also this new chick I haven’t seen before. She had crazy hair. I thought it was kinda hawt. In any case, head to GameTrailers and check it out for yourself.

That’s enough for today. Time to go score some food, a copy of Extraction, and then head to work.
