Tingle! Tingle! Kooloo-Limpah! #010

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

Hey, it’s been a month since this news feature, and while Riddles has a valid excuse for his absence this week, I absolutely do not, so how about we get started?

When will you get one? How much will you pay?

Nintendo Announces the Date for Japanese-Relevant Details Regarding the 3DS! How Exciting!!!

Yeah, I know, not really. But it’s not a complete complete waste. On September 29th, we learn when Japan is getting the device and how much it will cost them. This should at least give us an idea of how much the thing is going to run the rest of us in the non-Japan countries. And it’s not impossible that we’ll be getting stateside-relevant details as well, so keep your ears peeled for late September.

Oh no, Insomniac, you too?

Yup, Insomniac is joining in the fun and announcing that they will announce a title “sometime between now and the Penny-Arcade Expo”. Woo-hoo. I wonder if it could possibly be the basically-already-announced Resistance 3. Let’s hope it’s something more exciting.

But Back to the 3DS and What WON’T be Launching With It

Resident Evil Revelations and Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition won’t be! Capcom mentioned that these titles are not planned for release within the fiscal year. If you remember, Nintendo promised that the 3DS will be out in all regions by the end of the fiscal year, and thus the Capcom software cannot launch with Nintendo’s hardware. Unless, of course, Nintendo breaks its promise; something completely unheard of!

Anyway, I’m being sarcastic because I couldn’t give a flying fuck about these two titles.

Long time no MS Paint job

British Pirates Must March the R4 Card Off the Plank

Staying in this Nintendo vein, the company has won a battle in the UK to make the R4 card (and similar cards) illegal. So that includes importation and marketing. Sure, I’m not a pirate when it comes to games, but what does this mean for the harmless homebrew community? I’m sure they’re not happy while Nintendo giggles in their pile of money.

Radiant Radiata’s staff Story’s Historia

Okay, so that title was a bit of a stretch, but it almost makes sense if you know the story. And the story is that key members of the under-appreciated gem, Radiata Stories – though not tri-Ace – are working on a new title for the Nintendo DS, Radiant Historia. What’s up with this new trend anyway? People leaving their original companies and attempting to recreate their past with synonymous titles. “Final Fantasy” becomes “Lost Odyssey” becomes “The Last Story”, “Radiata Stories” becomes “Radiant Historia”. It’s not really subtle, people, and it’s pretty annoying.

But I digress, the point is that you should keep your eye on this one, especially if you let Radiata Stories pass you by. You sad soul.

Here’s Some Really Terrible Voice Acting…

Very cute, but they can sound awful...

Yes, I may have just listed Jack and Ridley as a couple that just barely didn’t make Riddlethos’ Top Five Romance Hits last week, but that doesn’t mean that I can’t completely rail off on the voice acting for the game that their romance takes place in. Radiata Stories was a random buy for me. I think I was still relatively new to the PS2 world, and so I was greedily buying everything that looked like a half-decent RPG. I got lucky with Radiata Stories as it is a fun and sweet tale with some really intriguing mechanics if I can remember correctly. I never actually beat the game. I was going up that stupid maze thing at the end when some sand or something shot me back down to the bottom. I promptly said “fuck this” and never beat it. I think I eventually watched both endings on YouTube. Anyway, loved the game at the time. I went back to replay it, and while it didn’t hook me in the same way, my feelings weren’t particularly soured, I just put it down fairly soon after I started.

But back to the voice acting! I did some research almost 4 months ago for an old article for Lusipurr.com. I was shocked. I watched probably close to an hour of cutscenes, and I couldn’t believe the performances. I didn’t remember thinking that it had bad voice acting, and while some of it was the pacing of the scenes, the vast majority of the actors were terrible. Perhaps because it was a wacky comedic game most of the time, the direction was to go over the top. But not only is the game ultimately darker than a lot of games that try to be dark, but one of the first rules of good comedy is to commit to the scene. If the people are believable, the ridiculous things will seem more ridiculous! Instead, there’s just a lot of terrible over-acting. Anyway, that’s one rant about yet another great game with really disappointing voice acting (save the expected exceptions)

The Honourable Mentions

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

Well well well, the official lists are done, and after such rigorous activity, I feel like I need a little wind down. Here are some stupid shits that were either too stupid too make the list, or perhaps there were too many variables. This will be a lot more brief than I anticipated, but I got places to BE!

talesThe Cleanup (Misses)-
Be careful. These are ALL from the Tales series…

Lloyd and Sheena: Sure, Lloyd was an idiot, but Sheena single-handedly made the game worth playing with the best voice acting of the bunch and a rockin’ bod. Because of all the multiple endings, you pretty much can end up with Sheena, but like I said: Lloyd’s a dumbass and deserves nobody.

Genus and Presea: Riddles hates me for this one, but I think Genus’ sweet childhood crush on what he thinks is a girl his age, but is really an adult trapped in a girl’s body could make way for some incredibly twisted and cool plot developments. Presea might be an adult on the inside, but how much does that matter if she is always treated like a child and eventually gives into her fate? I think it could have been pleasantly fucked up, but of course Tales of Symphonia teased and then dropped it.

Yuri and Judith: Judith is like a slightly less cool Sheena, but Yuri is like a NOT THE COMPLETELY INCOMPETENT BORING JACKASS THAT LLOYD IS. So something should have happened between this hot couple! And when they first meet, it’s amazing. There is sexual tension and flirting through the ear. Then they meet up with the rest of the gang and BLAMMO. It’s gone. Namco Bandai MUST be aware that they’re getting a rise and not finishing the job. Maybe that’s their fucked up fetish.

They really were sweet in an odd way...

Friends With Benefits (Hits)-
Riddles wants Tifa and Cloud on the list, and I agree, but I’ll leave it to him if he has the time. If he doesn’t, know that we both have a soft spot for the guy with the over sized sword hooking up with the chick with over sized breasts.

Jack and Ridley: This couple very well could have made the official list if I had played the game more recently or more often. As it stands, I don’t quite remember the story enough to support their spot against the other romances. I just remember that Jack was a stupid but really sweet character that showcased some of the pure innocent emotions in young love. There’s a particular scene near one of the endings by a tree when Ridley has become far more robot-like, and Jack is just trying to admit feelings for Ridley. Jack was comic relief, but he was a far more honest character than one might anticipate.

Link and Malon: Screw Zelda, she’s annoying and hideous anyway, save Twilight Princess. Riddles was right was he talked me out of this because no romance is really ever explicitly implied except for when Malon’s dad says you can marry his daughter. And that doesn’t really count. But Link is such a stud that you can’t help but assume that Saria, Ilia, Ruto, Malon, Zelda, and even Nabooru all have the hots for him. So since I, in turn, assume that Link has his pick, I pick Malon. She’s feisty, smart, and hot. ‘Nuff said.

What do you think? You guys have been giving great feedback already listing many of your own choices: Elena and Nathan, Cole and Sasha, even Wander and Agro…
But no matter how twisted you are, keep ‘em coming. Who did miss, and what did we get wrong in your opinion?
