Scatter Storming. Issue #027

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

I’m back, bitches! I know Scatter Storming has been a little inconsistent of late, but everybody’s allowed an off month or so, right? At least I’ve kept up my Tingle News on Fridays, although those have been a little short. Whatever! I’m a busy dude! Let’s get started.

Lunar’s fucking great –
Seriously, what a fantastic JRPG. Sure there are clichés all over the map, but like with DQVIII, it’s all done so well that it doesn’t matter. Another point that great story-telling is better than great plot. Hear that, FFXIII? But Lunar is truly great in its hilarious writing. While I typically enjoy talking to NPCs in JRPGs, Lunar makes it extra worth it with a lot of writing, and a lot of funny writing. I find myself laughing way more than I expect. Not only that, but chatting with the locals will often hold some insight as well, which makes the experience that much deeper and involved. Again, you should be taking notes, FFXIII. I was expecting to buy my PSP for Dissidia, and while that’s fun, I’ve been all about the Lunar. What a pleasant surprise! Well, the Lunar and…

Patapon 2 is also fucking great -
I’m glad I chose this for my Backlog Week game, because it turns out the game opens up one mission after I stopped playing. The leveling-up system is a little convoluted concerning a few details, but overall, it’s a bunch of fun. The visual style and sound design is just great, and only 3.5 hours in, I can tell how outrageously addictive it’s going to be (and already is). After ignoring the PSP for so long, I’ve quickly become a big fan, and the Patapon series is so far a huge point in its favour. More to come as Backlog Week continues.

Best Website Ever -
We’ve all been following the Infinity Ward/Respawn madness, and I’ll dive into the actual news on Friday, but until then, check out the website for Respawn Entertainment. Gets the job done!

I WANTZ TEH MARIOZ -
Seriously. After that event, I’m really stoked. I’m trying my hardest to get an early copy for you guys so I can get another day one review. I’m not holding my breath this time though.

Bah-ha ha ha ha! Habs beat Caps! -
Suck it Ovechkin.

That’s it! I’m back to my working-late schedule for a few weeks, but hilariously, I tend to stick to my Riddlethos schedule a bit better when I’m busier. I got a cover to make, so I’ll see you assholes later!

Scatter Storming. Issue #026

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

Finally I’m back! After Riddles took over with that horrible 25th issue, we had those technical issues, and there was just never a good time to post a late issue, so it’s been forever! But I’m glad to be back with my good ol’ weekly round of verbal diarrhea. Let’s get to it!

I’m both hating FFXIII so much more and liking it more -
Seriously, the more I think about the tunnel I had to get through to get to Pulse, the more I can’t believe that I played through it. I mean, I really am a big fan of the battle system, but even the Crystarium system didn’t mean anything until Pulse. I’ve played about 12 hours in the post-game now, and it’s easily the most fun I’ve had with the game. Still, it’s nothing truly spectacular because it’s really just marks and really pretty scenery with cool Terra-esque flowers. Back to the shitty story though, I think it just got worse as it progressed. There were no supplementary characters worth note, and the main cast stunk, and things made less and less sense as you got along. Oh well, I’m so anxious to complete all the marks, I’ll probably end up Platinum-ing the game.

Broke Update -
Still broke. Stupid Revenue Canada. They said 4 weeks! 6 MAX! And I sent stuff in early, so it’s supposed to be fast. It’s been about 8 weeks now, and I’m still scraping by. No fun. I want to buy games. I want to buy a PSP. I want to buy Monty Python stuff off of Amazon. Also, the Lord of the Rings (gimped) trilogy is on Blu-Ray. I want to buy that too, even though I know I’m a sucker for it. GAH! I like money and I want more of it again. Still, playing the piano is nice.

I have an XBox? -
I kinda forgot until I thought I was going to play Splinter Cell. As a guy who was chuckling at the PS3 just over a year ago, it’s interesting to see that it’s quickly become my system of choice. Now it’s going to get back at me by crashing when I try to play Gears 3 or Mass Effect 3 or potentially Alan Wake.

HOCKEY PLAYOFFS! -
Fuck yeah! Only one of my three teams made it, and they’re going to be wiped out first round, but who gives a fuck?! HD HOCKEY PLAYOFFS! I always wanna follow it, and never had a TV, or stuff came up, but CBC is covering 4 of the 8 match-ups for round one, and I’m going to soak that up. But first: Modern Family.

Piano music? -
Long-time loyal reader SiliconNooB once suggested on Facebook that Lusipurr and I should somehow record some of our video game piano stylings for the listening pleasure of our fans. I don’t know about Lusipurr, but I could definitely do something from my end if there were any interest. Lemme know!

Broke Update -
STILL FUCKING BROKE!

That’s it. I gotta make the cover now (I think it’s going to be of Snapped Celery, my latest character), and then Modern Family and then the playoffs. Ice cream will be involved too.

Scatter Storming. Issue #025

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

SS25Well, he brought this upon himself. He had to act like a cock, so now I’ve taken away his Scatter Storming privileges.

And yes, they ARE privileges. Scatter Storming was actually my idea. I just decided to let him have fun with it. It’s simple enough for him, after all.

But now, he doesn’t even have that. Sorry, Ethos! Sucks to be you! Today we’re gonna talk all about MEEEEE!

Stupid Final Fantasy XIII

Seriously. I know I haven’t written much about Final Fantasy XIII, and there’s a pretty good reason for that: I haven’t played much of it. I’m about about 16 hours right now, and I’ll be honest: the game struggles to maintain my interest. It’s really a bit shocking, but for the most part, FinaL Fantasy XIII just plain bores me. The gameplay is non-existent outside of combat, and turn-based combat alone can’t carry a game. It would help if the story was worth a shit, but god, it’s just… not. In any way. At all. Whatsoever. It’s bad. The plot is bad, the writing is bad, the characters are bad, it’s all… bad.

I don’t hate Final Fantasy XIII. I think it does some things very right, and it’s gorgeous to look at – but it’s easily one of, of not the worst numbered Final Fantasy game. And, after waiting for over three years, I was really hoping for more.

Modern Warfare 2…?

It’s true, I’ve been playing it lately. I’m actually somewhat decent now, which makes it much more fun. I’m still not great, obviously, but I can hold my own, and actually feel like a part of things instead of a king-sized target for the other team.

Seriously, though, fuck the “Stimulus” DLC. Fuck it. Fifteen dollars for five maps? Three of which have been lifted from the original Modern Warfare? Where the hell does Activision get off?

Unemployment

…yep, I still don’t have a job. Unemployment really isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. I’m bored and sleepy all the time now, because I have nothing to do, and I get no exercise. My body is slowly retreating into this odd, vegetative state. I feel like I should go dig a hole in the ground and hibernate.

I don’t regret quitting my job, though. I’ll spare you the details, but it was well past time for me to go. After five years or so, I’d kinda overstayed my welcome.

But hopefully, I’ll find another job before my brain completely shuts down. And… before I run out of money.  Not sure which is the higher risk right now.

On that note, who wants to pay me to write about videogames?

Nobody? Yeah, I didn’t think so. Shame, because I’ve been writing about games for years now, and I fancy myself to be pretty good at it. It’s been my goal to break into the videogame journalism industry for a long time now, and I’m hoping that all of this payless work eventually amounts to something. Like, y’know. A job.

On a lighter note, The Office

Man, I love that show. I’ve watched it here and there for the last few years, but only recently have I gotten serious, sat down, and watched it from Season 1 on up. I just finished Season 3. I would see about downloading Season 4, I’ve recently discovered that I have no hard drive space on my laptop. No, really, I have like… less than a gig of space. I need an external badly.

And that’s it! Ethos has been officially one-upped. Hopefully, he’ll learn something from it. Who knows, if this is well-received, I might just take over Scatter Storming for good. After all, this is my website. Meaning I can do whatever I want. And Ethos has to do what I say.

Scatter Storming. Issue #024

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

ss024I’m in a bizarre anti-social mood, so let’s just dive in.

Out of the field and back into the tunnel -
Although Pokémon has been taking up most of my time, I’ve been making an effort to play Final Fantasy XIII too, since I quite enjoy a lot of the game, and if I beat it this week it might still be relevant to review it. Still, while the game is getting harder and harder (Lightning’s not a good enough Sentinel yet, and I often refuse to put Snow in my party, so that doesn’t help), it’s a little annoying to be plucked from the expanse of Pulse and dropped back into somewhat of a tunnel. Sure, there are more branching paths and whatnot, but game really does need more dicking around.

Despite all that, I’m excited to beat the game and go for completion since you can continue your save after beating the final boss, a nice change. It’s no New Game Plus, but it’s something.

Thank god for slow game season -
Seriously, I’m the most broke I’ve been in a very, very long time. I had to trade in for FFXIII and SoulSilver, and I hate trading in games. I don’t think there’s a game I want until Splinter Cell: Conviction, and I shouldn’t be so broke by then.

Seriously, I have to deal with this asshole? -
Check out the comments in Riddles’ little “revenge” post. What a little diva. I get that he quit his job and he’s having a bit of a life revolution, but Riddlethos and I shouldn’t have to suffer his little rebellion. We should be benefiting from it! We’re not the crazy oppressive mom, we’re the cool hip dad! Seriously, there’s just two of us, it should be easy to follow the simple rules we’ve laid out. Ones like “ONE MOTHER FUCKING OFFICIAL REVIEW PER GAME”. Argh, sorry, I love the guy, but I’m hoping a public rant will open up his eyes. He’s supposed to be the conservative one, remember?

Clarification on the 3DS -
Absolutely nothing is official yet, but IGN has a great article explaining three different technologies that the 3DS would likely choose between. I mean, it’s already been chosen, but you know what I mean. We have to wait until E3 for the absolute word, but what’s the internet for if not rumours and speculation?

That’s that. Modern Family time.

Scatter Storming. Issue #023

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

ss023Wow, Riddles is fail. I stayed up extra late for the mother fucker because he promised he’d be around at a certain time so we could do those IMpressions that I promised last night. Now I just look like an asshole! Granted, midnight typically isn’t late for me, but it has been recently, and Riddles knew that, so don’t hold back your hate.

Obviously this is a Final Fantasy issue, so there’s no need to hesitate.

I don’t find Vanille that annoying -
I needed to get this out of the way right off the top. I mean, I agree with Riddles that she sounds like she’s perpetually having sex, but that’s not so bad, right? And when compared to Rikku, Vanille is a godsend. At least Squeenix isn’t obsessed with giving terrible hooks to these characters. Remember Rikku’s unforgivable “Yunie, y’know?”. Goddammit, it makes me want to kill babies just thinking about it. Anyway, Vanille’s far from my favourite, but she’s not so bad.

Dude, the battle system is fucking awesome –
Excepting recently when I’ve been killing it a bit more easily, the battle system is consistently engaging and fun. I noticed something that I think is the reason why I love it so much. In a game like FF9, the battle system itself is pretty boring really. Now, it never really bored me because I enjoyed seeing the payoff from my leveling and the decisions I made with equipment and abilities and such. The battles were payoff for working the backend. The fantastic thing about FFXIII is that not only is there still that noticeable difference in battle for tinkering with the backend, but the battles themselves take quick reactions and deep strategy to master. It’s a beautiful balance. If you power-up the wrong roles or don’t construct a key paradigm, you’ll find yourself fucked in battle. However, if you made fantastic choices in the menu systems but make a few grave errors in battle, you won’t survive either. The result is easily the most engaging and satisfying battle system ever created. Pogo came to watch me play for a bit, and I took 10 seconds to try and explain something without pausing, and I was very quickly slaughtered. No longer are battles part of a larger grind to manage overall HP and MP until the next inn, but rather individual efforts. It brings you into the moment and makes the game perpetually exciting.

vanilleYeah, there’s something missing -
Although I’m enjoying the cast and story, and immensely enjoying the battle, paradigm, and crystalium systems, I have to mirror what everybody else is saying in that there does just seem to be something missing. And I’m actually okay with the linearity and lack of towns, but there isn’t even a sense of different cultures. It’s fine that there’s only humans, but Final Fantasy has been so great at representing diversity, and while Cocoon has a rich culture, I’m surprised and disappointed to not have more insight. Also, while I say I don’t miss towns, I do miss what they represent: gathering information. While I’m enjoying the datapad, or whatever it’s called, I do miss picking up that sort of insight from the scattered comments of NPCs. They also provide quirk and personality to the world. So although I’m thoroughly enjoying the game, I am missing that extra layer of depth.

The music’s a mixed bag -
While it’s not a soundtrack I’d import the sheet music for, I’ve been very impressed with a lot of the music. It can be moody, unique, and very effective. Yet once in a while, there’s a track that comes on and I have to mute and unmute the sound to make sure it’s actually coming from the game. I think it’s Sazh’s theme, actually, because it usually props up when he’s diving into his past. Bad, bad choice.

That’s enough for me! Back to the game!

Scatter Storming. Issue #022

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

ss022Silly Paranoid Riddles. We all know Scatter Storming is better.

Although I do have to thank him for giving me his camera as a parting gift. Let’s get to it.

Hey, guess what? I played Heavy Rain! -
It’s true! Thanks Andogo for the loner copy. I’d even consider buying it myself, but you know I’m broke when I trade in two games (one of them Darksiders which I know I’ll re-buy) just to afford Final Fantasy XIII next week. Anyway, I think I have to slightly disagree with Riddles and say that Heavy Rain really is Quick-Time Event the game. But they are more forgiveable in this case. They branch out, and there is a degree of decision and influence in Heavy Rain that doesn’t exist in the QTE disasters of God of War. Still, after a time, although I’m thoroughly enjoying the story, I get sick of just tapping on-screen cues. But I’m sure I’ll trek my way through it if I still have a copy after I’m done with Final Fantasy XIII, God of War III, and Pokémon Soul Silver. So…hrm…that doesn’t look so optimistic anymore, but there is the added bonus of Heavy Rain looking to be relatively easy to Platinum, so we’ll see. But all that brings me to my next point…

Theme Week War -
There’s no debate that Final Fantasy XIII gets next week. Despite all the mixed buzz about it, I’m just as hyped as ever. Final Fantasy IX isn’t a fan favourite and its obviously my favourite, so I’m reserving final judgement on this one until I play it. And honesty, the big complaints about this one (linear for a long time, no towns), don’t scare me in the least. But, that leaves the following week. Riddles the Moronicus wants it to be God of War III Week. Boo-urns, who the fuck cares? I’ll play it, yeah, but he and I both agree that it’s a fun, yet vastly overrated series. Maybe not vastly, but notably. Anyway, my vote is for Pokémon Gold & Silver Week. Riddles argues that God of War is the bigger release, but I call bullshit on that! Pokémon is fucking huge and he just wants God of War because he’s never cared about handhelds or the PURE AWESOMENESS that is Pokémon. Whatta douche, what do you guys think?

Oh dear -
I have no idea why any woman has ever had any interest in me after writing a paragraph like that.

Etrian Odyssey! -
For long-time fans of Ethos (I’m sure there are many), I used to write reviews for RPGamer.com. The first one I wrote for a new release was Etrian Odyssey II. This was a game I never would have played otherwise, and a game that literally everybody I talked to on staff warned me about. I ended up loving the game and almost bought a used copy the other week. In fact, I only didn’t because of the previously mentioned broke situation. But after going for my occasional browse of RPG-related news, I stumbled upon art for Etrian Odyssey III. Huzzah! I didn’t even know it was coming. This is now officially on my radar. If they can keep up all the awesome without making it dissolve at the end like last time, then it could even be on the top of my lists for the year.

That’s all. Go home.

Scatter Storming. Issue #021

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

ss021Hello! Welcome to a very belated issue of Scatter Storming! While some of the lateness is indeed due to laziness/Olympics, I was also working on the new look for the series. I’m actually a fan and I think it might stick around for longer than 10 issues, but we’ll see. For this new “magazine” series, I’ve opted out of titles because it didn’t seem to fit, although I am required to make the cover after I write the issue for it to work, and therefore this blurb is the last thing to go in. It’s all new around here! Anyway, let’s dig in!

God of War 2 -
After watching Riddles play a healthy chunk of the game while in Toronto, I decided to pick up God of War 2 where I left off…practically at the beginning. I’m a little further than where Riddles got to, and I’ve been able to fill in the gaps made when just observing from those times when I went to make food or take a pee break or whatever. The point is that I can easily say that I like God of War 2 more than 1. The locations are more interesting, it looks better, and it’s just a generally more polished experience. However, the series is still not much more than “pretty good” to me. It’s fun and epic, and the combat is polished and surprisingly deep, but there’s not much personality otherwise. Sure, Kratos is a badass and kills everyone he sees, but despite his tragic past, I feel no connection to him. I like the idea of playing as a sort of anti-hero, but Kratos comes across as one-dimensional to me. The CGI cut-scenes are a treat to watch, and the series certainly knows epic like the back of its hand, but there’s nothing really in the way of mood or personality. Add that to continuously annoying quick-time events and absolutely pointless button-mashing required to open many doors, I just can’t bring myself to call the games fantastic, incredible, or anything past “pretty good”. I’m glad I bought the collection, and I’m glad I’m quickly on my way to beating both titles, and I’ll buy God of War 3 and very likely like it quite a bit, but unless the end of God of War 2 gives me the most amazing 5 hours of gaming I’ve ever experienced, I expect my view on the adored series to remain the same.

I WANT MOAR GAMEZ 2 PLAY! -
Seriously, I’ve resorted to the type of “English” that makes me want to hurl babies off of cliffs. That’s how badly it frustrates me that Final Fantasy XIII comes out right after this ridiculously long break from work. It’s obviously not that bad. I have God of War 2, Magna Carta 2, Final Fantasy VI, Folklore, Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, and Brutal Legend all in my collection waiting to be beaten. Wow, that’s actually a sizable list. What the hell am I complaining about? I must seem like a spoiled asshole. I better do something quickly to make me look good!

You all get free pizza! -
With extra cheese and chocolate covered pepperoni!

Okay, I lied -
No pizza for any of you. But at least I distracted you all from whatever I was trying to distract you from!

That’s it! My pride in this new cover look is enough to distract me from my depression created from Riddles’ departure. …for now…

Scatter Storming. Issue #020 “Exit Classy”

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

ss020Here it is, folks. The end of another 10 issue run of Scatter Storming. We all hoped it wouldn’t happen. People ran screaming in pain through the streets because of this feature’s continued existence but still it presses on. While this 10 issue run was supposed to have “classy” as the theme, it definitely deviated from that on a few occasions. Still, I’d like to pretend that I was more consistent, so I’ve made one final simple and clean cover for this twentieth issue. However, I still haven’t really played any games. The Olympics are liquid crack and I had to prepare for Doofus McDoofus’ arrival. Actually, speaking of that dude, maybe I’ll dedicate this issue to him.

A day of firsts -
After Riddles’ first flight on a plane, he arrived for the first time in a different country, made his first trip on public transit, had his first Volcano Crunchwrap from Taco Bell, made his first purchase with Canadian dollars, and thus had his first pocket full of loonies and toonies. All was looking up for our young friend until…

BAH HA HA HA HA HA HA! -
Apparently Riddles couldn’t handle his first flight of Canadian stairs. Yup, after I told him that the bathrooms were downstairs, I hear him wander off, then silence, then CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK “Ow”. All I can say is that I wish I had cameras installed in my house to capture that wonderful moment.

Oh wait, I can kinda talk about games! -
I watched Riddles beat Bioshock 2 and then watched a fair amount of the online play. The single player looks like a lot more fun from a purely visceral standpoint. There are more enemies, more powerful enemies, and more ways to take them all out. Unfortunately that seemed to, in turn, shift the focus to combat. At least in the final stages. While there were some undoubtedly strong moments in the final few hours, and while I didn’t have the context of the rest of the game, Bioshock 2 seems to fall apart in an even worse way than the original did at the end. Not from a lack of potential either, from what I can tell. But Riddles will no doubt cover all of this in his impending review that will overshadow this Scatter Storming edition anyway.

Also, multi-player -
Right, I mentioned the online multi-player. It seems cool. Nothing more really to say. It has some cool ideas that all tie into the single-player mechanics which is neat, but while it copies some of Modern Warfare 2’s strong points, it doesn’t seem to be able to compare to the experience overall. And when you have the choice between good online multi-player and excellent online multi-player, there’s really no reason to not choose the latter unless you have a strong preference for setting.

What? No picture post? -
Yeahyeah, I know the “10th Issue Extravaganza!!!” had a few celebratory MS Paintjobs at the end of it. However, just because the style rotation happens every 10 issues, doesn’t mean each time it happens it’ll be a celebration. It was just a happy coincidence last time. Also, there’s a lot of content planned for this very special week so suck it up!

That’s it, there’s the review outline below to peruse and Riddles sure-to-be epic Bioshock 2 review coming soon, plus even more content later on, so here’s my exit and the exit of classy Scatter Stormings. At least for now…

Scatter Storming. Issue #019 “Mark Thunder in the Scatter Storm”

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

ss019Hello there everybody! Welcome to 6:30am Eastern Standard Time. The ONLY standard time in my books, because I’m a Torontonian and we’re assholes like that! Anyhoo, this week has been a blast so far. Good ol’ Riddles/Ethos rivalry, incredibly stupid pictures, and solid video game impressions. So let’s add to this cesspool of nonsense with the most pointless feature on the entire site: Scatter Storming!

20th Issue next week! –
Yup, I’ll have to come up with a new way to organize my “cover art” after that, since I think 10 issues is a good rotation number. My 10th issue won a Best Riddlethos of 2009 award, so I have a lot to live up to.*

Mark Fucking Thunder! -
Oh yeah! I forgot to mention it in my opening blurb, look at me as Mark Thunder on the cover! I’m such a fucking badass. Pit that dude against Nathan Drake, Jack Bauer, a big daddy, and Commander Shepard, and Mark Thunder would easily come out on top. No question. **

I’ll irony you! -
God fucking damn Final Fantasy XIII and my three weeks off that don’t correspond with its release. Seriously, I beat and loved Mass Effect 2 and Darksiders, and now I have nothing new to play until I don’t have the time to play it! Oh well, I’ll just stay up all night playing FFXIII and then get fired when I don’t show up for work. Worth it?

Heavy Rain Review –
IGN seems to love it. I still don’t really care.

Fable III looks awful -
Truly. And I had some fun with Fable II. Genuine fun. I mean, I sold it and I don’t regret it although I don’t sell many games. But still, I would never have called it awful. It looks like the design philosophy for Fable III is “how can we make this the most annoying unappealing game ever?”. Seriously. Be bogged down in politics while failing your arms in front of Natal. Sounds like the perfect gaming experience to me. Goddamn it.

I’ll leave you with this -
9 seconds of comedic gold from my early years. You don’t see me, but you hear my voice. Enjoy, and see you later, suckers.

* “a lot” in this case may also mean “practically nothing”
** Alternatively to no question, you may ask the question: “seriously?” To which I would reply “No…definitely not. Nathan Drake would win”. Mark Thunder would, however, defeat the big daddy handily.
