Tingle! Tingle! Kooloo-Limpah! #006

Holy crapsticks! Did I ever walk into a wagon full of news! This will definitely be more than 2 stories, so let’s dive in!

God of War Tease Levels Up Again

If you haven’t been paying attention, it turns out that God of War III gives players a “secret” URL after they Platinum the title. “Secret” was in quotes because the website is obviously public knowledge now. The website depicts a rainy scene with occasional lighting flashes revealing a figure (potentially a reflection) that looks suspiciously like Kratos. The interesting thing about this site is that there is an icon in the top right corner that has been filling up slowly since the website was discovered. So far there has been an update to the site each time the icon fills up another corner in the circle.

Initially on March 18, when the bar was a quarter full, it was a similar scene, but it was barely raining, and there was no figure on the left. Then, on March 28, it was half full and the weather incorporated heavy thunderstorms. Finally on April 28th, it reached its current state with the figure on the left and the mysterious figure appearing in the water. The going theory is that the gauge fills a bit every time somebody obtains a platinum trophy in the game. I’m a little curious why every update has ended with an “8″. The former is a cooler idea though.

Activision Bungies Back

Despite analysts saying that Infinity Ward is essentially done for (big surprise), Activision has stayed in the headlines for a different reason. Legendary Halo creator, Bungie, has singed a 10-year exclusive publishing deal with the big bad Activision giant. Community manager for Bungie, Brian Jarrard confirmed that they are “looking at a multi-platform release,” although he didn’t give specifics on which platforms or what type of game. At this point we can assume that it will not be Halo and it very likely won’t involve the Wii.

Also, despite Bungie stating that this has been in the works for years, and analysts speculating that this is good for gamers in general, the announcement does seem a little timely with the mass exodus of Infinity Ward employees. I can’t imagine the timing of this announcement doesn’t have everything to do with Activision wanting to save face.

Linux? Seriously?
Remember when Linux support was ousted out of the PS3 Slim? And then 3 people cried? Well in March, Sony released a firmware update that included removing the “other OS” support from all consoles and 3 more people cried. Apparently one of those people cried a lot because Anthony Ventura of California has filed a class action lawsuit against Sony on “behalf of himself and all others similarly situated. The lawsuit basically says “you promised us Linux! You promised! And now you’ve left me all alone! I thought we’d be together forever! You promised!”

If you have absolutely nothing better to do with your life, you can read the whole filing here.

Not actually from the game, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Now Your Little Sister Can Be Your Wife!
The Japan only 360 title “My Wife: A Wife Just For You”, isn’t such a surprise in itself. Dating sims are popular in Japan, and the ability to create your wife (within the game’s choices) and go through various stages of romancing her isn’t so surprising or new. Why this game’s announcement caught my eye wasn’t the concept or even the “Sleep Together Mode” so much as some of the descriptions of your wife. Two of her personality options are “big sister type” and “little sister type”. Yup. I’m not joking.

Well that’s it! More than last time, ‘eh? DOUBLE to be factually accurate. Riddles may wank to Kotaku, but at least I balance that with my IGN masturbation. Anyway, the battery is low on my compy, and I have dishes and laundry and showering and washing the bathroom and playing Patapon 2 to do! Later!

Hey, you assholes! So first I was MIA, then Riddles decides to not show up with his list. Whattagwon with that? I was even at a party in a different city and I could keep up with my list! Psssshaw! Oh well, here’s your 2nd edition of the new news-ified Tingle! Tingle! Kooloo-Limpah! And because I only had one story last time, I’ve decided to treat you guys this time. TWO STORIES!

Metroid: Other M has a Metroid: Other Release Date

Err, that means it’s been delayed. A good two months, actually. It was scheduled for June 27th, and now it’s theoretically going to be released on August 31st. This is almost nostalgic for me, because there have been so few Nintendo releases recently worth hyping up that I’ve forgotten what it was like for the big N to delay a title to ensure its quality. And hey, it worked for Ocarina of Time, so I’m not complaining. Plus, it seemed a little too close to Galaxy 2.

Speaking of, in the same breath Nintendo delayed the release of Sin & Punishment 2 until June 27th from June 7th. This time, Nintendo was blunt in pointing to the close proximity of the release of Super Mario Galaxy 2 as the reason for the delay.

More ex-Infinity Ward employees are respawning.

Get it? Because Respawn Entertainment is the new development studio headed by Infinity Ward founders Jason West and Vince Zampella. Enh? I’m a genius. Anyhoo, since the dramatic firings of the two aforementioned heads, 13 employees have left Infinity Ward and we learned yesterday that a few key members have joined up with Respawn. Todd Alderman was a Lead Designer at Infinity Ward and he now holds the very similar title of Lead Game Designer at Respawn Entertainment. Adding to those numbers are Lead Environment Artist Chris Cherubini, and Lead Animators John Paul Messerly and Mark Grigsby.

In addition to a few other members making the switch, including some programmers, Activision insists that they have a “deep bench” of talent remaining. We’ll see what happens when the now scooped out Infinity Ward pits its next product against Respawn Entertainment’s self-described “big blockbuster”. I’m more of a Call of Duty observer, but I’m extremely interested in how all this plays out in…oh…2 years from now.

That’s it! Maybe next week you guys’ll get three stories from me, but I don’t know if you can handle it! Especially because I’m so much better at this than Riddles. I mean, does he have awesome hokey headlines?!

BOO-YA! Thank you Riddles for HLL-ifying my Tingle banner to officially make this your new Friday source of news at Riddlethos!

Yes, Riddles and I agreed that we should split the Hey! Look! Listen! job, but neither of us felt comfortable with me taking over directly. Therefore we came up with the perfect compromise: take my weird non-tangible barely-updated feature and make it the Ethos Friday news feature! Winning all around! Anyhoo, to kick things off right, I’ll half ass this and only give you one piece of old news!

NPD Has No Surprises! Surprise!
Yup, God of War led the way selling 1.1 million in March, unless you want to combine the two Pokémon remakes, because Heartgold and Soulsilver sold nearly 1.8 million combined, and even the two Final Fantasy XIII versions combined for just under 1.5 million units sold. Anyway, nothing else is really interesting unless you think that New Super Mario Bros Wii still selling half a million is interesting. I think that title should have been a download. But then again, I think that about everything! I just bought an essentially new PSP Go off a friend for a good price. Hells yes.

Speaking of, I’m going to go play Patapon 2. Or Dissidia. Or maybe even break out a classic and try Tactics for the first time. What do you think of this new TTKL/HLL News decision? Lemme know in the comments below, and I’ll reply after MORE AMAZING PLAYOFF HOCKEY tonight. Whatta good week!

After a glorious return to Hey! Look! Listen!s, I thought it would only be fit to follow it up with its gimped brother, the Tingle! Tingle! Kooloo-Limpah! The feature in which I talk about previews, editorials, interviews, and potentially news that I found interesting that Riddles didn’t. Let’s start!

Sands of Destruction has influence -
I touched on this in my latest Scatter Storming, but I wanted to post the only trailer I’ve actually seen for the game. It reminds me a little of Skies of Arcadia with the special moves and hokey one liners, but it seems to have the same charm too. In fact, this trailer gave me the idea for my JRPG Relapse Week. 2010 has already had one great surprise with Darksiders, and a lot of my risks last year paid off, so I’m excited to give this one a try.

We old geezers don’t like 3D -
IGN’s been pumping out the editorials lately, and while some seem to be pure flamebait, most have been a great jumping point for conversation. I hate being an old man when it comes to 3D things, but even after seeing and enjoying Avatar, I still see it as a gimmick. I thought I would have enjoyed that movie just the same in 2D and it wouldn’t have given me a headache like 3D. But from movies to games, I just haven’t been shown how 3D can improve the experience. My roommate disagrees saying, “once 3D becomes glasses-free, if I had the option to play an awesome game or play an awesome game in 3D, I see no reason why I’d choose 2D.” Bah, I say! I am still far from convinced.

This'll make sense...

Nintendo’s lazy and we let them continue being lazy -
This is a great read especially considering it’s coming from Matt Casamassina. Whether or not you like him, the guy covered Nintendo for over 10 years, he knows his shit. It’s great to see him simply call Nintendo out on their incredible laziness since the Wii’s runaway success. Anyway, this has been talked to death, so I’ll leave it at that.

We all need a good laugh -
Oh man, if my expectations weren’t low enough already. You all NEED to see this “trailer”. White Knight Chronicles has never been so oversold. Truly a fantastic watch.

We’re back, folks. This is the bizarre love child of Hey! Look! Listen! and Scatter Storming. Wherein there’s no particular date or set form, but I generally talk about previews, interviews, and scattered news that Riddles doesn’t care about. Given that the title is Nintendo centric, it’s only appropriate that I’m going to talk about Zelda and Final Fantasy on the Wii.

eff eff sea sea sea beeEff Eff Sea Sea: Sea Bee Preview -
That’s FFFCC: CB, or Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Crystal Bearers. Otherwise known as “The game that’s trying to compete with Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days for dumbest name. Anyway, this is a li’l old, but watch it anyway. It’s from late November, so recent enough. The gameplay actually looks quite intriguing, but I’m upset to hear that they’re doing away with traditional levels. I don’t understand that. It’s one of the most satisfying parts of any game to level up and pour over the resulting enhanced stats. Bozon didn’t really go into detail, but it sounds like the game isn’t a complete Zelda clone. I have to see extensive menu coverage before my worry is eased. But still, I’m more optimistic for this game than ever before.

And now a trailer for the same game -
Official trailers for Crystal Bearers suffer from being way too dramatic. I mean, even if the graphics were PS3 HD caliber, it’d be difficult to take that voice over seriously. I’m also not drawn in by grand sweeping statements that don’t connect me to the characters at all. I mean, it looks like the story segments will be well executed, but the trailer didn’t really help the cause. Especially when the one character-based throwaway gag at the end is the most stupid offensive thing I’ve ever heard. Hey, why not just quote it?

I think we’d both benefit if you went on a diet. No offense.

I mean, sure, I get that they’re trying to make fun of the fact that women are apparently obsessive with diets, and it’s supposed to be tongue and cheek, but it just feels very 1960s to me. Like, “aren’t you supposed to be in the kitchen?”. And not in the making-fun-of-actual-sexists way, but in the we’re-actually-sexists way. Despite all this, I’m still going to give the game a chance. If only by listening to reviews, initially.

The Legend of Zelda Spirit Tracks - LogoAonuma talks Zelda -
I really do like the way Aonuma’s talking about the next Wii Zelda title. I know that Nintendo’s always way too positive, but it sounds like they know that Twilight Princess suffered from a case of the vapids, which is encouraging. Aonuma’s mind helmed the brilliant likes of Majora’s Mask and Spirit Tracks along with strong titles like Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass, so I think he’s entitled to another legitimate chance on the Wii after Twilight Princess. After all, TP didn’t suck, it was just pretty empty.

Aonuma talks more Zelda -
This time on the DS. I was backing the transition of the “toon shaded” Zelda sub-series to the DS from the beginning, and Aonuma talks about more reasons why it was a good idea. Like the last interview there’s not much meat, but for Zelda fans, scraps are like a meal.

Despite Riddles’ (truly) great Hey! Look! Listen! yesterday/this morning, I found a few supplementary news items and previews that I think are worth mentioning. And what other title could be more perfect for the role of a Navi-themed column follow up? I know everyone hates Tingle, but the dude is fucking hilarious. He’s a 40 something year old dude in a creepy costume tied to a balloon selling maps! That is fucked up! It’s why I love Majora’s Mask, the games were still about personality, no matter how terrifying. Anyhoo, onto to the (previ)(n)ews.

New Super Mario Bros Wii Preview -
This will likely be the only other game I buy for the Wii this entire year (the first being Excite Bots). Although I thought it would be good anyway, it looks better than I anticipated. I have no idea how I’ll feel about the multiplayer, which I know is a focus, but the single player looks just as addicting and well-constructed as the 2D Mario games have ever been. Modern Warfare 2 on the same week, I think, but still. Should be a more than worthy purchase.

The Big Sisters were always Badass.

The Big Sisters were always Badass.

Bioshock 2 Preview -
Yes, I’m aware of the irony, but this preview actually made me excited for Bioshock 2 for the first time ever since it was announced. I never thought I’d say this, but I think it has potential. I liked the first one quite a bit. Great mood, tight gameplay and all that. I just never thought it was the total masterpiece that Riddles would claim while drooling profusely and speaking in tongues. Either way, for the first time, it looks like this sequel might live up to the first one in my eyes. Another game worthy of purchase.

Wii HD with Blu-Ray Next Year? -
This is the second story after that stupid DSi LL story if you watch the video. I agree with Chobot’s tone on the story: skeptical. We all know Nintendo in the past 3-4 years. High technology hasn’t exactly been their philosophy. Still, with Miyamoto’s recent comments, and with the high-def format war being won, I don’t think it’s entirely out of the question that Nintendo would plan to be part of the future mass-market. HD screens are far more common than they were when the Wii was announced, and as oblivious as Nintendo can be, they do know where the money is, and high-def is no longer just for the elite. I’m obviously being optimistic because a HD system would theoretically attract more developers who would make more games that I would care about, but a boy can dream. Plus, Nintendo won’t be in SD forever, but I’ll be as surprised as everyone else if the switch is as soon as next year.
